Tom Holland says Christopher Nolan's 'The Odyssey' SAVED 'Spider-Man: Brand New Day'; reveals he is open to star in more Spider-Man films

Tom Holland may be releasing ‘The Odyssey’ and ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ back-to-back this July, but the actor has shared that he may have been instrumental in ‘delaying’ his superhero film. While promoting the upcoming Christopher Nolan film, Holland spilled the beans to GQ, revealing that he personally asked Sony Pictures to delay production on ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’, just so that he could work on ‘The Odyssey’. The actor disclosed that he had an “uncomfortable conversation” with Sony Pictures chairman Tom Rothman after learning that both projects were scheduled to begin filming at the same time.

“So I said to Chris, like, ‘Look, I want to do this movie, but if I’m going to do it, I’m going to have to call Sony and have a very uncomfortable conversation’,” Holland recalled. Studio bosses ultimately agreed to push back production on the fourth Spider-Man film. According to the actor, “Sony were happy to move” as Nolan is known to stick to his filming timelines. He added that ‘The Odyssey’, “started on schedule and finished nine days early. Any other director, it might have been a slightly different conversation.”

How ‘The Odyssey’ SAVED ‘Spider-Man’

Holland went on to state that the shift in schedules ultimately ‘saved’ ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’, allowing the production to secure filmmaker Destin Daniel Cretton. He said, “‘The Odyssey’ almost saved ‘Spider-Man’ because we wouldn’t have had Destin. He wouldn’t have been ready to make the movie when we were ready to go. We wouldn’t have had the six-month period to develop the script with Destin to get it to a place where it is now. And I truly believe that we’ve made the best version of any ‘Spider-Man’ movie going. So while it was a tough pill to swallow for Sony, I think in hindsight, they’re very grateful that it happened.”

The actor also revisited a past comment indicating that he was keep to step out of the role. Referring to a comment made in 2021 when he suggested that continuing to play Spider-Man beyond the age of 30 would mean he had “done something wrong”, Holland now says his perspective has evolved.Addressing his earlier remark, the actor explained, “I was trying to remember what I meant … I think the point of it is that I would love to pass the baton on … It’s definitely something that we talk about a lot at the studio.”He then joked, “I could also have been trying to leverage Sony and scare them into thinking I wasn’t going to do ‘Spider-Man 4’ now that I had a new deal on the horizon.”Despite the initial scheduling conflict, both projects are now set for back-to-back summer releases.
