The world young children are growing up in is very different from what the previous generation has seen. Society is now dominated by technology and AI. By now we’ve all heard this phrase, “AI will take your job!” While this statement is debatable, certain life skills technology will not replace in the near future. There are some skills that will matter most in the future, which will actually help children stand out in the AI-driven world. Here are five essential life skills every child needs to develop for the future.

Emotional intelligence

AI can respond to words, but it can’t truly experience emotions, and thus emotional intelligence will remain one of the most valuable human skills. Children who understand how to manage their own feelings and emotions handle situations better and thus build better relationships. Parents can build emotional intelligence by encouraging children to name their feelings, listen to others’ perspectives, and solve conflicts with empathy.

Critical thinking

AI can answer all the questions, but knowing how to ask questions is a skill guaranteed to become more important. Children need to learn how to analyse information instead of simply accepting everything they see or hear. The future will require people who can think independently, identify problems, and make informed choices.A child who learns to think critically will not just use technology, they will know how to use it wisely.

Adaptability

Adaptability is the ability to thrive in unfamiliar situations. Since the careers and skills children will need in the future may look very different from today. Adaptability as skill allows one to make mistakes, and most importantly, learn from them. Children who will try, fail, and improve will become aware of the evolving world around them. Parents can develop adaptability by helping children experience new challenges. Whether it is learning a new skill, dealing with disappointment, or adjusting to change, these experiences teach resilience.

Creativity

AI can’t “imagine,” but humans can. Imagine leads to curiosity, emotions, and experiences, and these qualities are the core of creativity. Authentic art; be it music, painting, or writing, can only be born through human creativity. Art comes to life when one looks beyond the obvious. Parents can play a big role in encouraging creativity in children. When a child indulges in creativity from a young age, he starts thinking beyond the obvious and thus creativity takes on!

Independence

As technology becomes a bigger part of our lives, children still need to learn how to manage things on their own. Confidence, resilience, and living well everyday are the most valuable life skills, and their importance won’t budge at all no matter how advanced technology is or becomes. Parents can build this skill by giving children age-appropriate responsibilities instead of doing everything for them. When children try things themselves, they learn patience, problem-solving, and confidence.
