10 longest bridges in the US: From the Lake Pontchartrain Causeway to the Seven Mile Bridge

Most bridges are forgotten almost as soon as they are crossed. A few seconds over a river, a glance through the window, and the journey continues. The longest bridges in the United States belong to a different category altogether. These are structures that stretch for miles across open water, wetlands, and vast coastal landscapes, where the road seems detached from the surrounding land. In several cases, drivers spend so long on the bridge that the shoreline disappears from view entirely. Unsurprisingly, Louisiana dominates the rankings. The state’s geography is a patchwork of bays, swamps, and marshes that leave engineers with little choice but to build roads above water. Together, these bridges tell a story not only about transportation but also about the landscapes that made them necessary. As reported by WorldAtlas, some of the longest bridges in the United States are far more than simple river crossings. Stretching across lakes, bays, swamps, and coastal wetlands, these vast structures carry motorists for miles over landscapes where traditional roads would be difficult, if not impossible, to build. Louisiana dominates the rankings thanks to its extensive network of marshes and waterways, with several of the country’s longest bridges located within the state. Check below the top 10 America’s longest bridges.

Lake Pontchartrain Causeway

Lake Pontchartrain Causeway

Nothing else in the country quite matches the scale of the Lake Pontchartrain Causeway. Running nearly 24 miles across the broad waters of Lake Pontchartrain, it links the communities of Mandeville and Metairie on opposite sides of the lake. For much of the crossing, drivers are surrounded by water with little sense of how far they have travelled or how much remains ahead. The first span entered service during the 1950s, while a second parallel bridge arrived more than a decade later to accommodate growing traffic. The structure became internationally known through its long-standing record as the world’s longest continuous bridge over water, a distinction it still retains in its specific category.

Manchac Swamp Bridge

Manchac Swamp Bridge

A short distance behind the Causeway in length is the Manchac Swamp Bridge, another Louisiana giant. Carrying Interstate 55 across an immense swamp system, it extends for almost 23 miles through a landscape of cypress trees, waterways and marshland. The bridge forms a substantial section of the interstate itself. Travellers heading between New Orleans and Jackson often cross it without realising how much of the route is elevated above wetland. Local folklore has attached plenty of stories to the area over the years, giving the crossing a reputation that stretches beyond engineering and transport.

Louisiana Airborne Memorial Bridge

Louisiana Airborne Memorial Bridge

The Louisiana Airborne Memorial Bridge is better known to most people as the Atchafalaya Basin Bridge. It cuts across the largest river swamp in the United States and forms a critical section of Interstate 10 between Baton Rouge and Lafayette.Driving across it offers a changing view of waterways, forests and floodplains. Rather than a single uninterrupted structure, parts of the crossing consist of parallel spans that come together at key points along the route. Since opening in the early 1970s, it has become one of the most heavily used long bridges in the country.

Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel

Virginia’s Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel occupies a category of its own. Unlike most bridges on this list, it combines elevated roadways with submerged tunnel sections. The route crosses the mouth of Chesapeake Bay and provides a direct connection between Virginia’s Eastern Shore and the Hampton Roads region. At certain points, motorists leave the bridge and descend beneath the water before re-emerging on another elevated section. The arrangement allows large vessels to move freely through shipping channels while maintaining a continuous road link. The result feels less like a bridge and more like a carefully stitched collection of engineering solutions.

Bonnet Carré Spillway Bridge

Bonnet Carré Spillway Bridge

Interstate 10 appears repeatedly in Louisiana’s long-distance bridge network, and the Bonnet Carré Spillway Bridge is another example. Stretching around 11 miles, it passes over wetlands, flood-control infrastructure and parts of Lake Pontchartrain’s western edge. Its location is tied closely to the Mississippi River. During periods of exceptionally high water, the spillway below can divert excess river flow toward the lake, helping reduce flood risks elsewhere. The bridge effectively sits above one of the region’s most important flood-management systems.

Louisiana Highway 1 Bridge

Further south, the Louisiana Highway 1 Bridge carries traffic toward Port Fourchon, one of the Gulf Coast’s key industrial hubs. The elevated roadway was developed partly because the low-lying routes it replaced faced persistent flooding and land subsidence. The crossing rises above marshes and waterways for more than eight miles. In a state where coastal erosion remains an ongoing concern, infrastructure often needs to adapt to changing landscapes. This bridge reflects that reality perhaps more clearly than most.

Jubilee Parkway

Jubilee Parkway

The first appearance from outside Louisiana comes in neighbouring Alabama. Jubilee Parkway stretches across Mobile Bay and forms part of Interstate 10’s route through the region.Residents commonly refer to it simply as the Bayway. The bridge has become an everyday feature for commuters travelling between Mobile and communities on the eastern side of the bay. Its official name comes from a local natural event known as a “jubilee”, when marine life gathers unusually close to shore under specific environmental conditions.

San Mateo-Hayward Bridge

San Mateo-Hayward Bridge

California’s longest bridge lies across San Francisco Bay. The San Mateo-Hayward Bridge creates a direct connection between the East Bay and the San Francisco Peninsula, carrying thousands of vehicles each day across roughly seven miles of water.Much of the structure remains low and close to the bay’s surface. Then, rather suddenly, the roadway climbs into a higher section that allows ships to pass beneath. That shift in elevation breaks up what would otherwise be a remarkably flat crossing and offers broad views across the surrounding coastline.

Seven Mile Bridge

Seven Mile Bridge

Despite its famous name, the Seven Mile Bridge falls just short of the full seven miles. It remains one of the most recognisable road bridges in the United States and a defining feature of the Florida Keys. The modern bridge opened during the 1980s, replacing an older railway structure that still survives in part alongside it. Open water surrounds the roadway for much of the journey, creating one of the most distinctive driving experiences in North America. Film producers have long appreciated the setting, using the bridge in several major productions over the years.

General W.K. Wilson Jr. Bridge

General W.K. Wilson Jr. Bridge

Back in Alabama, the General W.K. Wilson Jr. Bridge spans more than six miles across the Mobile-Tensaw Delta. The area contains one of the largest wetland systems in the country, making elevated transport routes a necessity. Its twin arch design stands out against the otherwise flat delta landscape. Although the bridge carries an official name honouring an engineer and military officer, many locals use a more informal nickname inspired by the appearance of its paired arches.
