Met Gala announces 'Fashion is Art' dress code; Beyonce, Nicole Kidman and Venus Williams to co-chair event

Met Gala 2026 announces ‘Fashion Is Art’ dress code; Beyonce, Venus Williams, Nicole Kidman to co-chairThe Met Gala will return this May with an all-new dress code, fans and fashion experts are going to want to look forward to. Organisers confirmed on Monday that the 2026 dress code will be “Fashion Is Art”.Come May 4, all eyes will turn to the iconic stairs of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, where celebs from film, fashion, music and sport will step up in their fashionable best, while interpreting the theme in their own distinctive ways. This year’s event will be co-chaired by Beyonce, Nicole Kidman, Venus Williams and Anna Wintour, along with a host committee chaired by designer Anthony Vaccarello and filmmaker Zoe Kravitz. The gala will also have an extended committee featuring Sabrina Carpenter, Teyana Taylor, Lena Dunham, Misty Copeland, Angela Bassett and Aimee Mullins.According to AP, Andrew Bolton, curator of the museum’s Costume Institute, suggested the dress code was selected for maximum flexibility.“Hopefully, it will put an end to the rather obsolete ‘Is Fashion Art?’ debate once and for all,” Bolton remarked.Beyond the red carpet spectacle, the gala serves as the primary fundraiser for the museum’s Costume Institute, a self-funded department. It also marks the launch of the institute’s annual spring exhibition. The new Conde M Nast Galleries will occupy nearly 12,000 square feet (1,115 square meters) off the museum’s Great Hall. This will now make the exhibit convenient for viewing and will prevent long lines in the museum, once the show opens to the public May 10. The segment will run until January 10, 2027.
