Sunjay Kapur'sRs 30,000 crore will: Delhi High Court allows forensic examination; Karisma Kapoor, Rani Kapur granted permission to carry on inspection

Karisma Kapoor‘s children and Rani Kapur, the mother of late Sunjay Kapur, scored a win over Priya Kapur and her son, after the Delhi High Court permitted a forensic inspection of the late industrialist’s will. The estate, worth an estimated Rs 30,000 crore hit the headlines over a family dispute that erupted over the will, currently kept in a sealed cover with the court registry. As per a report on Bar and Bench, in an order dated February 26, Joint Registrar Gagandeep Jindal allowed Sunjay Kapur’s ex-wife, Karisma, and his mother, Rani, along with their authorised representatives and forensic or handwriting experts, to inspect the original will on March 10 at 3:00 pm. The Registrar directed that the inspection will be conducted in the presence of authorised counsel representing Priya Kapur. The court added that if Priya’s counsel fails to remain present, Karisma and Rani will be permitted to proceed with the inspection. However, the order also states that no photographs or copies of the original will, shall be permitted during the inspection.During the hearing, Karisma’s counsel argued that although a copy of the will had previously been shared, examination of the original document was necessary to verify its authenticity. They sought permission for forensic analysis to determine future legal steps.Priya, on the other hand, opposed the plea, stating that such applications were not maintainable at this stage. They also asked that any forensic examination be deferred until the evidence stage of the hearing. As per the reports, it was also argued that the Joint Registrar ‘lacked jurisdiction’ to decide on the inspection request. The court rejected these submissions, observing that placing a document in a sealed cover does not automatically restrict the Registrar’s powers under the Delhi High Court Rules to permit inspection. The Registrar further noted that no specific judicial order had been passed directing the confidentiality of the will. The will is at the centre of an ongoing legal battle involving multiple members of Sunjay Kapur’s family. Karisma Kapoor’s two children and his mother have approached the High Court challenging the authenticity of the will that allegedly transfers his estate to his widow Priya and their son.
