In a profound loss for the music world, DJ Afrika Bambaataa, a foundational pioneer of hip-hop and the visionary behind the Universal Zulu Nation, has passed away at 67 years old. Renowned for his groundbreaking contribution to breakbeat DJing and his timeless hit ‘Planet Rock,’ Bambaataa played a crucial role in shaping hip-hop into an international phenomenon.

Afrika Bambaataa, the Bronx-born DJ, producer, and Universal Zulu Nation founder who helped shape early hip-hop, has passed away at 67. Reportedly, he passed away around 3 a.m. on April 9 in Pennsylvania from complications related to cancer. His demise closes the life of one of hip-hop’s most influential early figures.

Afrika Bambaataa’s demise and hip-hop legacy

TMZ first reported his passing, and the Universal Zulu Nation later confirmed it in a public statement. In that message, the group called him a pioneering architect and global ambassador of Hip Hop culture and said his legacy is permanently embedded in the foundation of Hip Hop history. The group also described him as the “Godfather of Hip Hop” and said he helped grow the culture from the Bronx into a global movement built on “Peace, Unity, Love, and Having Fun.”

Born Lance Taylor, Bambaataa rose to prominence in the South Bronx in the 1970s by DJing parties that helped define early hip-hop. He later became known for electro records, including ‘Planet Rock’ and for helping popularize breakbeat DJing. Through the Universal Zulu Nation, founded in the early 1970s, he pushed hip-hop as a cultural and social force far beyond New York.That legacy remained deeply contested. The Hip Hop Alliance said in its tribute that Bambaataa’s imprint on Hip Hop history is undeniable, but added that his legacy is complex and tied to serious conversations within our community. The group also said it remains committed to truth, accountability, and the preservation of Hip Hop culture.The Hip Hop Alliance extended condolences to all who were impacted by his life, his work, and his presence. It also said, “Hip Hop was built on truth, and through truth the culture continues to grow, heal, and evolve.”
