Anupam Kher says ‘ignore those calling cinema propaganda’: 'Let's celebrate The Kashmir Files and Dhurandhar success'
Veteran actor Anupam Kher weighed in on the ongoing debate around cinema being labelled as propaganda, asserting that audiences ultimately decide what works. Veteran actor Anupam Kher weighed in on the ongoing debate around cinema being labelled as propaganda, asserting that audiences ultimately decide what works. Speaking at the International Film Festival Delhi 2026, the actor emphasised that the success of films like Dhurandhar: The Revenge reflects genuine public choice, not manipulation.

‘People are not idiots’

Addressing the media, Kher dismissed criticism around propaganda in cinema, stating, “I think we should ignore people who are calling cinema propaganda. We are putting too much energy into them. They are redundant and irrelevant.”Referring to the box office response of films like The Kashmir Files and Dhurandhar: The Revenge, he told ANI, “Let’s celebrate the success of The Kashmir Files and Dhurandhar. People are not idiots. They are not going to attend a 12 o’clock show that is housefull unless they genuinely like the film. People go to watch films because they enjoy them. I think we should say rest in peace to those who are calling it propaganda.”

‘Cinema can influence, but it’s also a business’

Reflecting on the larger role of cinema, Kher acknowledged its impact while underlining its commercial nature. “Can cinema change people? Yes, it can. It depends on the individuals sitting in the dark auditorium. But cinema is also a business, like any other,” he said.He further pointed out that while storytelling remains important, viewers ultimately take away what resonates with them personally. “Many people run channels as a business; they don’t do it just to tell a story. But if I go to watch a film, I may take something away from it,” he said.

Celebrates Tanvi The Great’s silver jubilee run

The actor also spoke about his film Tanvi The Great, which has completed 25 weeks in theatres. Calling it a significant milestone, Kher said, “It’s a silver jubilee. It was my belief that we should run the film in limited theatres, and for it to be re-released and complete 25 weeks is a great achievement.”

‘Training is essential for actors today’

Highlighting the importance of craft, Kher stressed that formal training is crucial in today’s industry. “Today, there is no possibility of becoming an actor without training. I have survived 41 years in cinema and nearly 52 years in professional theatre, with over 550 films, only because I am a trained actor,” he shared. He also credited OTT platforms for expanding opportunities for actors, technicians, writers, and directors, while noting that film festivals play a key role in idea exchange and celebrating cinema.

Praises Delhi film festival

Sharing his experience at the festival, Kher expressed enthusiasm about the scale and energy of the event. “I took a tour of the entire venue. It’s fabulous. The vibe is amazing. I’m very happy that my film Tanvi The Great is also being screened here,” he said, adding that he believes the festival will grow stronger in the years to come.Tanvi The Great also features an ensemble cast including Boman Irani, Jackie Shroff, Arvind Swami, Pallavi Joshi, Karan Tacker, Nassar, and Iain Glen.
