BAFTA internal review launched: Assessment reveals that there were issues with the event planning
Following a distressing incident involving a racial slur during its recent award festivities, BAFTA has come forward to acknowledge significant shortcomings in their event execution. An internal investigation unveiled considerable gaps in both planning and crisis management protocols, which led to a failure in their obligation to ensure a safe environment.

This year’s award season had a lot of mishaps, including the BAFTA ‘n-word’ controversy. As per the latest reports, an assessment was launched into the event planning, revealing that there were major lapses that resulted in the incident, among other things. Read ahead to know more about the situation.

BAFTA launched an internal assessment after the award mishap

As per the latest Deadline report, it was revealed that after the award ceremony, which was held on February 22, an internal review was launched into the matter. The British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) conducted an internal assessment of the matter, which revealed that there were lapses and issues with the event planning that night. While the report cited that there was no “malicious intent” or “institutional racism” found during the investigation, there had been other issues with how the live broadcast was handled. The report added that there were a “number of structural weaknesses in BAFTA’s planning, escalation procedures, and crisis coordination arrangements.”

BAFTA states that the award was not planned adequately and up to the mark

As part of the review, the BAFTA also issued a statement, admitting that there were a lot of issues with the operations behind the cameras. “We did not adequately anticipate or fully prepare for the impact of such an incident in a live event environment, and as a result, our duty of care to everyone at the ceremony and watching at home fell short.”They also officially apologized for the mishap and the misjudgment in planning. Their apology note read, “We apologize unreservedly to the Black community, for whom the racist language used carries real pain, brutality, and trauma; to the disability community, including people with Tourette Syndrome, for whom this incident has led to unfair judgement, stigma, and distress; and to all our members, guests at the ceremony and those watching at home.”

What happened at the BAFTA Awards 2026

During the award ceremony this February, when ‘Sinners’ actors Michael B. Jordan and Delroy Lindo got up on stage to present an award, a racial slur was shouted amidst the audience. Tourette syndrome activist and producer of the award-winning film, ‘I Swear’, John Davidson was heard in the background, shouting the n-word.While Davidson had immediately issued a statement and apologized for the matter, the issue had still become a topic of debate online. While his actions were involuntary due to Tourette’s syndrome, many people had debated and questioned the team behind the BAFTA awards and how they had let the word slip through during the live broadcast when it could have been edited out.
