England Test captain Ben Stokes has found himself at the centre of a fresh controversy after a late-night incident at a Chelsea nightclub following England’s victory over New Zealand at Lord’s.The incident occurred in the early hours of Monday after several England players went out to celebrate the Test win. While a larger group was reportedly present before midnight, Stokes and fast bowler Gus Atkinson are understood to have remained out beyond the team’s recently introduced midnight curfew, putting them in breach of ECB regulations.According to a report from The Telegraph, Stokes and Atkinson became involved in an altercation involving a Saracens academy rugby player. While details of the confrontation remain under investigation, it is understood that the rugby player allegedly attempted to punch Atkinson. However, the punch reportedly missed its intended target and instead struck an ECB security guard who was accompanying the England players. The security guard suffered injuries that required stitches. Neither Stokes nor Atkinson was injured during the incident.Importantly, ECB sources have maintained that the England cricketers “were not the aggressors” in the confrontation. It also remains unclear whether any further punches were thrown after the initial blow. Police were not called to the nightclub, and no arrests were made. The incident has triggered an ECB investigation, with the matter also referred to the Cricket Regulator. Saracens have confirmed they are looking into the involvement of one of their academy players.A senior rugby source has reportedly defended Stokes, saying: “The Saracens player caused this and has a rep. I would not want the England cricket captain to lose his job over this.”Despite suggestions that Stokes and Atkinson were not responsible for starting the altercation, the ECB is said to be furious about the curfew breach. The timing is particularly sensitive as England recently tightened off-field conduct rules following previous disciplinary concerns. With the investigation ongoing, Stokes and Atkinson are expected to miss the second Test against New Zealand, while vice-captain Harry Brook is likely to lead the side. Stokes’s future as England captain could also depend on the findings of the inquiry.
