Bengaluru-Pune Vande Bharat Sleeper trains: Travel time reduced to 13 hours? Here’s what to expect

Travelling by train entered a new phase with the introduction of the Vande Bharat Sleeper trains in 2026. It is undoubtedly a significant upgrade for train passengers. As per official updates from the Indian Railways and the Press Information Bureau (PIB), the sleeper variant is set to change long-distance overnight journeys in India. While the first Sleeper Vande Bharat train was inaugurated between Howrah (West Bengal) and Kamakhya (Guwahati, Assam) in January 2026, the next in the line has already become the talk of the town which is upcoming Mumbai-Bengaluru Vande Bharat Sleeper. It is expected to indirectly benefit travellers heading to Pune, which is also among the busiest transit hubs on this route. The announcement was confirmed through an official communication by Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw dated April 5. But the news attracted more public attention after Bengaluru Central MP P. C. Mohan shared the official letter on his X profile.

Railway update

It’s good news for travellers between Bengaluru and Pune, as the train could significantly cut travel time between the cities and change the game. Let’s find out more about this upcoming corridor:Bengaluru to Pune in 13 hours? Official updates suggest the train could pass through major cities’ junctions including Pune. As of now, travellers take more than 18 hours to reach Bengaluru from Pune on traditional trains covering around 938 km. But the upcoming Vande Bharat Sleeper train will potentially cut down the travel time between the two cities and make it a 12-13 hours journey, based on projections from the approved Mumbai–Bengaluru train.Route and connectivityThe approved sleeper service between Bengaluru and Mumbai is expected to pass through prime stations and Pune will be a main point. Prime features of Vande Bharat SleeperFully air-conditioned coaches AC 1, 2, and 3-tier 16 coaches Capacity of over 800 passengersErgonomic berthsImproved suspensionNoise reductionAdvanced safety systems including Kavach Automatic doors Speeds up to 160–180 km/hFare expectations Though exact fares are not yet officially announced, pricing trends from the first Vande Bharat Sleeper route suggest a competitive premium bracket and higher for AC First Class coaches. What it means for travellersThe Bengaluru–Pune corridor is not just any route, it connects people frequently travelling between IT hubs, educational centres and other cultural destinations. The launch of Vande Bharat Sleeper trains is part of a larger vision by Indian Railways to make train travel a luxury people look forward to. For travellers between Bengaluru and Pune, this isn’t just another train, it’s how people experience overnight journeys going forward.
