Veteran filmmaker Bharathiraja, one of the most celebrated names in Indian cinema, passed away on Wednesday at the age of 84.As reported by Indian Express, the director died at his residence in Chennai due to age-related health complications, according to family.Bharathiraja built a career spanning nearly five decades. He earned admiration as a director, producer, screenwriter and actor.Fondly known as “Iyakkunar Imayam,” Bharathiraja was widely respected for introducing a new style of filmmaking that focused on realism, human emotions and rural life.

The man who brought villages to the big screen

Born in 1941, Bharathiraja changed the way stories were told in Tamil cinema. During a period when many films relied heavily on studio sets and urban narratives, he shifted attention to villages, ordinary people and authentic locations.Bharathiraja believed that powerful stories could emerge from everyday experiences.

‘16 Vayathinile‘ changed everything

Bharathiraja’s breakthrough came in 1977 with ’16 Vayathinile’. The film featured Kamal Haasan, Sridevi and Rajinikanth in pivotal roles and went on to become a landmark success. The movie is still regarded as one of Tamil cinema’s finest achievements.Over the years, he directed several acclaimed films including ‘Kizhakke Pogum Rail’, ‘Alaigal Oivathillai’, ‘Mudhal Mariyathai’, ‘Vedham Pudhithu’, ‘Kizhakku Cheemayile’, ‘Karuthamma’ and ‘Anthimanthaarai’.

Awards, recognition and family life

Bharathiraja’s work earned widespread recognition throughout his career. He received multiple National Film Awards for his contributions to Indian cinema.His films ‘Mudhal Mariyathai’, ‘Vedham Pudhithu’, ‘Karuthamma’ and ‘Anthimanthaarai’ were among the projects that received national honours. He was also awarded the prestigious Padma Shri by the Government of India.Beyond filmmaking, Bharathiraja was known for introducing fresh talent and creating memorable characters. One of his distinctive trademarks was frequently naming his female leads with names beginning with the letter “R.”On the personal front, he married Chandraleela in 1974. The couple had two children: Manoj Bharathiraja and Janani Bharathiraja.

A legacy that will live forever

As reported by Money Control, the filmmaker experienced personal tragedy in March 2025 when his son Manoj Bharathiraja passed away following a heart attack at the age of 48. Manoj had followed in his father’s footsteps and built a career as an actor and filmmaker.Despite personal setbacks, Bharathiraja’s contribution to cinema remained unmatched. More importantly, he changed the grammar of Tamil filmmaking by proving that realistic stories could achieve both critical and commercial success.Meanwhile, the Mohanlal starrer ‘Thudarum’ marked one of his final acting performances. He played the role of Stunt Master Palani Swamy in the Mohanlal starrer.
