Blood Falls: The mysterious Antarctic waterfall that looks like it’s pouring blood

A bright red waterfall flowing through Antarctica’s icy landscape may look like something out of a horror film, but the colour has nothing to do with blood. Known as Blood Falls, the mystery of this red flow has puzzled scientists for many years.Blood Falls is located at the edge of the Taylor Glacier in Antarctica, where it appears as if blood falls from the mountains made of glaciers. Moreover, the red appearance of the water is brought about by a natural chemical reaction due to the presence of iron in the water below the glacier.

What makes it red?

As stated by the British Antarctic Survey, the water that flows from Blood Falls comes from an underground reservoir trapped inside the glacier and contains large amounts of iron and salt.Once the water reaches the surface and gets in touch with the oxygen of the atmosphere, iron reacts with oxygen and turns into rust.

Why isn’t the water frozen?

The most mysterious thing about Blood Falls is why liquid water exists in such an extremely cold area. It turned out that the water is incredibly salty, several times saltier than the sea water. It prevents the water from freezing because of the low freezing point due to the high concentration of salts.Blood Falls pictures and videos have made a comeback to go viral on X (previously known as Twitter) and surprise many people with its mysterious look. The spectacular visuals of the scarlet-colored flow running through the snow-covered Antarctica have generated intrigue and curiosity, as some users even at first thought it was real blood. Now that these images have taken the internet by storm, many have been eager to learn about the science behind the spectacle, turning Blood Falls into one of the internet’s hot topics.

An ancient sub-glacial lake

The source of the blood-colored liquid was identified as the ancient sub-glacial lake that exists at a depth of 400 meters below Taylor Glacier. It is believed by the British Antarctic Survey believes this lake formed approximately 1.5 million years ago, when the seawater was enclosed under the glacier’s surface and became increasingly saltier during thousands of years since then.

Another mystery solved by science

Although scientists knew where the red water came from, it wasn’t clear how it reached the surface of the glacier. According to a new study recently published in the Antarctic Science journal, tiny cracks and fractures within the glacier provide natural pathways through which iron-enriched salt water can move up and form Blood Falls.

What makes Blood Falls so important?

In addition to being an interesting feature of nature, Blood Falls allows researchers to investigate glaciers, the climatic history of our planet and the survival of microscopic life in harsh conditions. Moreover, the Blood Falls area is considered to be an opportunity for scientists to learn about the possible existence of life on icy planets like Europa and Enceladus, which might have bodies of salt water under the crust of ice. Now, almost a century after its discovery, Blood Falls still stands out among the most interesting natural phenomena in Antarctica.
