Christina Applegate reflects on leaving Brad Pitt at an award ceremony, calls it a ‘teenage mistake’

Christina Applegate has revisited her brief romance with Brad Pitt in candid, often self‑reflective detail, revealing how a teenage choice left a surprisingly long shadow on their relationship. In her memoir ‘You With the Sad Eyes’, she lays bare the story of their early‑1990s courtship and the awkward years that followed their breakup, painting a picture of two young actors navigating fame, ego, and regret.

How Brad Pitt and Christina Applegate met

Applegate and Pitt first crossed paths in 1989, when Pitt was starting in Hollywood, and Christina Applegate was already a recognizable TV face thanks to ‘Married…With Children’. The initial friendship gradually deepened into something more romantic, and the pair eventually attended the 1989 MTV Video Music Awards together. In her memoir, Applegate describes Pitt as a thoughtful and kind date, even offering to drive her mother, Nancy Priddy, and her friend Lori Allison, then married to Johnny Depp, to the event.

The MTV VMAs night

Inside the book, Christina Applegate writes that the date itself was sweet, but the end of the night turned tense. As she tells it, Pitt had to drive her mother and Lori home, and by the time they left the venue, he was visibly upset. “Brad had to drive my mom and Lori home, looking quite sullen,” she writes, explaining that he nearly got into a confrontation with a group of men at a gas station on the way back, which added to his frustration. She later admits in the memoir that she chose to end things with Pitt in favor of Skid Row frontman Sebastian Bach at the VMA after‑party, a decision she now calls regrettable.

Years of silence

Christina Applegate reveals that the fallout from that night lasted for years. In the book, she notes, “We didn’t speak for many years after that,” describing how Pitt seemed to hold onto the hurt. She also recounts that two of Pitt’s later high‑profile girlfriends separately asked her, in real‑life conversations, if she was “the girl who left Brad behind at the MTV Video Music Awards,” because he had told them he was still mad at her. Those quotes, drawn from Applegate’s own words in ‘You With the Sad Eyes’ as reported by E! News, highlight how the memory of that night clung to him.

Making peace

Eventually, Brad Pitt and Christina Applegate rebuilt a more cordial dynamic. Writing in the memoir, Applegate explains that they came to the understanding that she had been a kid at the time, and that while Pitt deserved better treatment, it was time to let go of the old resentment. In the book, she writes, “Eventually, we agreed that I’d been a kid, and though he’d deserved much better, it was time to forgive the child who dumped him for the lead singer of Skid Row.” That line, quoted in coverage of her memoir, captures the mix of regret, humility, and perspective that frames their story decades later.
