Snakes are scary slithering creatures, and spotting one sends chills down a person’s spine. Especially in India, where spotting venomous snakes is common. And there is a specific kind of fear that comes with spotting a cobra that has raised its hood, the stillness right before it decides what to do next. It’s a moment that can make anyone’s instincts scream to run or fight. But understanding what to actually do in that moment is more important than just raw instinct. Cobras do not hunt for a confrontation with humans; they’re shy, defensive animals that would rather retreat than strike, and most bites happen because someone panicked, cornered the snake, or tried to kill or capture it themselves. Here are some steps that you can take when encountering a Cobra snake

Stay calm and freeze in place

Sudden movement often triggers a defensive strike, so the first and most important response is keeping still. Cobras typically anticipate a threat before reacting, and freezing gives them a chance to decide you’re not one. Cobras strike mainly when they feel cornered or provoked, not as a first response, so staying motionless for those first few seconds is often what prevents an attack entirely.

Avoid direct eye contact and back away slowly

Staring directly at a cobra can read as confrontational, so keep your gaze low and at another angle while creating distance. Never turn your back completely, in order to track its movement as you retreat. This isn’t about looking away out of fear; it’s a controlled retreat that keeps you aware of the snake’s position as well.

Give the snake a clear path to retreat

Cobras almost always prefer to escape rather than fight, but only if there’s somewhere for them to go. If you can, step back and open up space rather than blocking their route is helps them escape safely, leaving you unharmed behind.

Keep a safe distance at all times

A cobra can strike up to roughly a third of its own body length, so staying at least 6–8 feet back is recommended, and further if it’s already raised its hood in a defensive posture. Move away gradually rather than bolting, since sudden sprints can startle it into striking.

Try reducing the odds of an encounter in the first place

Most cobra encounters can be avoided through some easy fixes. Rodents attract snakes to a property, gaps in walls or doors letting them inside, or tall grass and clutter giving them places to hide.So it is necessary to keep your home clean and free from rodents and pests, seal entry points with mesh or weather stripping, wear boots and carry a flashlight after dark if your house is in proximity to the area of these reptiles, and stay extra alert during monsoon season is also necessary as the seeping water pushes these slitherers out of the mud.
