Delhi-NCR rain alert on April 29: Thunderstorms, showers bring much-needed relief from heatwaves; what travellers need to know

Delhi-NCR residents woke up to a cold, breezy and rain-filled morning on April 29, 2026. This is an unusual but welcome shift in weather from sweltering heat to pleasant weather. Heavy rain, thunderstorms, and gusty winds swept through the region, offering a dramatic break from days of extreme heat. The sudden downpour cooled temperatures and marked the arrival of pre-monsoon. India Meteorological Department (IMD) had issued a ‘yellow’ alert for Wednesday for gusty winds and thunderstorms in Delhi-NCR.Relief from hot daysDelhi had been under a severe heatwave condition before April 29. There have been days when temperatures crossed 42°C in many parts of NCR. India Meteorological Department (IMD) had already issued alerts predicting a shift in weather which came true in the early morning as rain and thunderstorms hit the city. The rainfall, accompanied by strong winds, quickly brought temperatures down by several degrees, offering the much-needed relief. What It means for travellersRain has brought comfort from heat but also unpredictability for travellers. For those flying in or out of Delhi, this sudden weather shift can lead to flight delays, cancellations or temporary disruptions. Road travel within Delhi-NCR may also be affected due to waterlogging and traffic jams.Public transport users, particularly those relying on metro connectivity or app-based cabs, may experience longer travel times because of rain. Be ready to face traffic congestion. For tourists, it is the perfect time to explore and capture famous attractions like India Gate, Humayu’s Tomb and Qutub Minar. As Delhi looks cleaner, greener and more beautiful after showers. Air quality also gets better after the rain. Travel AdvisoryWeather experts advise travellers to remain flexible with their plans over the next few days. The IMD has indicated that such pre-monsoon activity may continue.Check real-time weather Allow extra time for airport transfers Carrying essentials like umbrellas, rain gear, and waterproof bagsThe sudden shift in weather is connected to a cyclonic circulation which is affecting northwest Rajasthan, Punjab and Haryana. This system is gradually moving towards north and northeast India. Mahesh Palawat of Skymet Weather said that the system is expected to reach Delhi and remain active until April 30.
