Dholera’s wildlife: A hidden ecosystem of birds, grasslands and coastal life
holera’s lesser-known wildlife: Birds, grasslands and coastal ecosystems

Dholera, located in Gujarat’s Ahmedabad district, is not just a coastal landscape but a rich and lesser-known ecological zone. This region boasts of grasslands, wetlands, and marine ecosystems which are home to an abundance of flora and fauna. As discussed at the 71st National Wildlife Week, Dholera and the surrounding Bhal region support hundreds of bird species, grassland mammals like wolves and blackbucks and a growing coastal ecosystem enriched by mangroves. Bird life Some 170 species of avifauna, including more than two thousand resident and migratory birds, inhabit this region. Rare and endangered species such as the lesser florican and the Macqueen’s bustard have, on several occasions, been sighted. There has also been a recorded sighting of several species of birds of prey and wading birds that visit the area. The wetlands of Dholera are undoubtedly one of the main reasons why this region is so rich in variety as far as birds are concerned. Fauna The grasslands around Dholera are also famous for the kind of faunal diversity that is typically found in arid lands. Many species of gazelles, jackals, foxes, and mongooses make their homes in these grasslands. The surrounding region of Velavadar is even famous for the large number of blackbucks that graze there. This further enhances the value of the region as a wildlife corridor. Flora There is also a wide variety of flora that may be found in and around these grasslands. Dholera is home to myriad grasses such as dozens of herb and climber species. Some of these are even relatively rare, such as the insectivorous flora. These plants are also critical to the survival of various other animals such as butterflies. There are about 25 species of butterflies reported from the region. Marine flora and fauna The coastal region of Dholera is home to diverse wildlife. The mangroves that can be seen along the region’s coastline enhance its value as a wildlife sanctuary. They provide the perfect breeding ground for crabs, mussels, and fish, while also providing sustenance for many bird species. Some of the region’s coastal waters have even seen the appearance of dolphins on more than one occasion. It is evident that the diverse wildlife of Dholera extends from its grasslands and wetlands to its coastal waters. Also read:International Mahjong Day! Home to extensive grasslands, seasonal wetlands, and a developing coastal area, this ecosystem provides a vital home for a range of species. Not only does it demonstrate the value of preserving biodiversity in lesser-known locations, but it also serves as a key point for the conservation of these animals in the region.
