Courtside bromance to rap beef: Drake's apparent shots at LeBron James, explained

A leaked track, a few pointed lyrics, and a friendship that appears to be on very different ground than it once was. Drake’s apparent diss at LeBron James on ‘1AM in Albany’ has taken over the internet, and the wildest part is that it didn’t even need a name drop to land. The two men were once about as close as a rapper and an NBA superstar could publicly be, sharing the same rooms, the same parties, the same energy. Now it seems all of that history has been folded into a verse, and the culture hasn’t stopped talking since.

The track that set it all off

The night before Drake’s ninth studio album ‘Iceman’ was set to drop, a five-minute song surfaced online, reportedly titled ‘1AM in Albany.’ Within hours, one particular verse had every NBA fan and hip-hop head on the internet doing the same double take. Drake raps: “I shouldn’t even be shocked to see you in that arena, because you always made your career off of switching teams up. Please stop asking what’s going on with 23 and me, I’m a real n****, and he’s not, it’s in my DNA.” He never says LeBron’s name. He doesn’t have to. The jersey number 23, the switching teams jab, the play on the DNA brand 23andMe — the target was undeniable from the very first listen.

Why these specific shots land the way they do

Drake’s dig about switching teams is grounded in real history. LeBron began his career with the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2003, moved to the Miami Heat in 2010, returned to Cleveland in 2014, and then joined the Los Angeles Lakers in 2018. He is heading into free agency again this summer, with his future once again uncertain. The switching teams line draws on that career trajectory and frames it as a pattern of shifting loyalty rather than strategic career decisions. The additional suggestion that LeBron is not real and that it is in his DNA pushes the commentary beyond basketball and into questions of character.

The moment that changed things

As Yahoo Sports reported, the tension between them traces back to the 2024 Kendrick Lamar and Drake rap battle, when James openly supported Kendrick by attending his concert and was seen rapping along to ‘Not Like Us,’ a track specifically aimed at Drake’s reputation. That public display from someone who had been closely associated with Drake for years marked a visible shift in where James stood. The two had been seen together at games, at events, in the same social circles for a long time before that moment changed the dynamic.

How Drake has been signalling it

The lines in ‘1AM in Albany’ did not arrive without prior indication. Drake unfollowed LeBron on Instagram, stopped referencing him during live performances of ‘Non-Stop,’ and replaced his high school LeBron tattoo with one of Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. Taken individually, any one of those moves could be read differently. As a pattern, they pointed in one direction, and ‘1AM in Albany’ appears to be the most direct expression of that shift yet.

LeBron’s position on it

LeBron has described their relationship as the two simply being in different places, while stating there is no hate and always love between them. When Complex pressed him on the situation, he kept his response brief, saying he always wishes Drake the best. He has not made any public statement in response to the leaked track.

What the internet has made of it

The reaction online has been split. One side has argued that LeBron’s decision to publicly align with Kendrick during the rap battle, particularly given that Drake had previously shown support for the James family during Bronny’s cardiac episode, was itself a significant breach. The other side has pointed out that Drake is the same person who once had LeBron’s face tattooed on his body, making the whole situation difficult to ignore.

What it signals going forward

With ‘Iceman’ now out, the leaked material suggests Drake is moving toward a more confrontational approach, stepping away from the broadly friendly public image he maintained for much of his career. Whether LeBron responds and whether this develops into a sustained public dispute are questions that remain open.‘Iceman’ by Drake is available now on all major streaming platforms.
