Eddie Vedder recalls his memorable horseback ride with Bruce Springsteen: 'I was trying not to act terrified'

Imagine a mere horseback ride turning into something so chaotic that it ends up becoming a hilarious story to narrate on a show. That’s what happened to Eddie Vedder and Bruce Springsteen; both iconic artists and legends in their own right, but when it came to horseback riding, it took a ‘terrifying’ turn. At least, that’s what Vedder revealed in a recent conversation while recalling a memorable and unexpected adventure involving the ‘Born to Run’ musician.Read on to know more about that experience.

A wild ride that took an unexpected turn

Picture this: Eddie Vedder and Bruce Springsteen, two rock legends, tough as nails on a stage, trying to look cool while riding horses with their wives. What started as a peaceful day out turned into something way more intense, and honestly, pretty funny in hindsight. It all came out when Vedder dropped by ‘The Howard Stern Show’ on March 3, 2026. He told Howard about this visit to Springsteen’s place with his wife, Jill, and Springsteen’s wife, Patti Scialfa. The plan was simple: everyone would go for a relaxing horseback ride. Vedder, though, isn’t a fan of horses. He straight-up admits they freak him out, but he still wanted to play it cool, especially with Springsteen leading the way.“I’m terrified of horses, and that ride with Bruce did not help anything at all,” Vedder confessed. “I was trying to act not terrified. I was like, ‘I got this…’ You know, don’t let the shark know you’re scared.”Springsteen did his best to help, laying out the basics. But it didn’t matter. Vedder’s horse suddenly bolted off the trail and headed straight into the woods. The guy’s just hanging on for dear life. “I don’t know what is happening, and I’m just trying to surf. What I remember is surfing the horse and looking, ‘Where am I gonna jump? Where am I gonna jump?’” he said. Everyone started shouting directions, “Pull right! Pull up!” But he couldn’t find a safe spot to bail. Luckily, the horse stopped on its own, and everyone just stood there, stunned.Patti Scialfa chimed in, saying the horse’s behavior was “very odd” and maybe it was “barn sour.” And then, just when Vedder thought it was over, the horse took off again. Somehow, he managed to hang on both times. Springsteen even told him, “That was pretty good horsemanship that you, you know, didn’t crack your head.”Vedder, who’s been friends with Springsteen for years, is out promoting his documentary ‘Matter of Time’. The two have crossed paths plenty of times; Vedder even played ‘My City of Ruins’ for Springsteen at the Kennedy Center Honors back in 2009. “All I could say is everything you imagined him to be, you’re not even halfway there,” Vedder told Stern. “Just as a person, as an artist, as a friend.”This horse story isn’t new for them, either. They already laughed about it in a 2022 interview around the time Vedder dropped his album ‘Earthling’. Vedder mentioned that his wife, Jill, rides all the time. Springsteen even gave him props for staying on the runaway horse, saying it was “well done.”After they finally made it back to the barn, Springsteen snapped a photo with his black-and-white camera and later sent Vedder two big prints. That little gesture ended up inspiring Vedder’s song ‘Picture’.
