'Feel good being useful': 78-year-old Richard Pulley of viral $1M fundraising campaign says he will go back to deliver food

78-year-old DoorDash delivery man Richard Pulley who raised $1M fund on GoFundMe after the Tennessee man’s story went viral said he would go back to work after everything cools down because he feels good being useful. Brittany Smith saw the 78-year-old man leaving a Starbucks order at the door through her doorbell camera and felt bad for the elderly man. Britanny called her husband and sent the video of Pulley to him and also posted on Facebook seeking help to identify the man. The identity of the elderly delivery man was immediately revealed on social media and Pulley’s story went viral that he started working for DoorDash full-time and completed 6,000 deliveries to date. He has started working after his retirement to pay the bills as his wife is under costly medication. Pulley said his wife was working for an insurance company and when the company let her go, it put them in a tough spot. They have social security but that’s not enough to cover all the bills, he said. Smith said she visited Pulley’s home to give an additional $200 cash tip but she was getting messages on social media as people were interested to start a fundraiser for Richard on GoFundMe. The result was mindboggling as 32,000 donors raised $957,000 for Richard. DoorDash CEO Tony Xu donated $20,000 to the fundraiser for Richard. The DoorDash team spoke to him and thanked him for his commitment to work. “I taught myself how to be a good worker again, although the last couple of shifts have worked out hard because people stop and take pictures with me and all sorts of things,” Pulley said as he planned to get back to work despite a comfortable amout for his and his wife. He said though he started the work for financial reasons, he gets to exercise as well as he delivers.
