Greece is famous for its proverbs that have been transferred from one generation to another. Proverbs represent great pieces of wisdom that relate to human nature and daily activities. The history of these sayings goes back centuries ago to ancient Greek philosophers who tried to capture great life lessons in simple words. The importance of Greek proverbs is that they teach people about life issues. Proverbs are used by common people to impart knowledge acquired by experience. One such Greek proverb is: “The tongue has no bones, but it breaks bones.” Although the tongue is physically soft and harmless compared to bones, the proverb highlights the immense power of words.

What this proverb conveys

One main idea implied in this quote is the ability of words to inflict serious harm. In fact, a physical wound can be healed through time, while emotionally harmful words may hurt a person for years. Being offensive, rude, or indifferent toward another person hurts their feelings and diminishes their self-worth and self-respect. This proverb teaches us that words are able to inflict deep wounds because although they do not hit physically, they can hurt emotionally. In addition, it is necessary to think about the consequences of one’s words. Furthermore, the proverb emphasises another important idea: words should be kind and respectful. People communicate daily with others, including family members, friends, co-workers and even strangers. The way you speak to others influences the relations you have with them. Words of encouragement help people face any obstacles; on the contrary, critical words can make them give up on everything. One compliment or even just a friendly talk can significantly affect the mood and mindset of people positively. Conversely, continuous criticism can lead to conflicts. The proverb further highlights the importance of exercising self-control and wisdom while talking. When human beings are angry, upset, or frustrated with something or someone, they tend to talk out of sheer emotion and not because of anything else. During such moments, we usually end up saying things which we do not really mean, but once they have been said, it is impossible to take them back. It is a sign of wisdom and emotional maturity to think before you speak, particularly in an emotionally charged atmosphere. We should not feel the need to express our thoughts and emotions at all times. This is why we must exercise control over our speech so that we remain on good terms with others. This ancient proverb provides an invaluable lesson regarding the immense power of speech. While speech itself might be harmless, what we say can affect other people’s feelings, build or damage relationships, and leave a lasting impression on their minds. This saying is a reminder for all of us to use our words carefully, treat other people kindly, and control ourselves. With constant communications, both offline and online, we have to consider the power of our words in this day and age especially carefully. Using our words to help, motivate, and inspire other people rather than harm them will definitely lead to building stronger relationships between people and developing a kinder society overall.
