He was born on a river island, which gave him his name

Maharishi Ved Vyasa is also known as Dvaipayana, meaning “island-born.” According to tradition, he was born on an island in the river Yamuna, as stated in chapter 63 of Adi-Parva of the Mahabharata, under Ansh-avataran-parva, the son of sage Parashara and Satyavati. His birth is described as miraculous, occurring under unusual circumstances arranged by Parashara. Interestingly, Satyavati was promised she would remain a virgin even after his birth, allowing her to later marry King Shantanu, making Vyasa a half-brother to the Kuru dynasty that happened quite before the Mahabharata battle even began.

He is counted among the Chiranjivis

Hindu scriptures consider Vyasa as one of the eight Chiranjivis, figures believed to be immortal and still alive somewhere on Earth, along with Lord Hanuman and Ashwatthama. This belief comes from the idea that his wisdom and work are timeless, transcending any single lifetime.

Lord Ganesha wrote the Mahabharata as Vyasa narrated it nonstop

According to legend, when Vyasa decided to compose the Mahabharata, he needed a scribe fast enough to keep pace with his thoughts and approached Lord Ganesha. Lord Ganesha agreed on one condition: that Vyasa could not pause while narrating. Vyasa countered with his own condition, that Ganesha must fully understand every verse before writing it down.

He appears as a character inside the epic he wrote

Unlike most authors, Vyasa is not merely the narrator of the Mahabharata but also a participant in its story. Through the practice of niyoga, with Satyawati’s daughters-in-law, he fathered Dhritarashtra, Pandu, and Vidura, making him the biological grandfather of both the Kauravas and Pandavas, around whom the entire epic of the Mahabharata is centered.

Guru Purnima is said to mark both his birth and the start of his greatest work

Guru Purnima is not just attributed to Ved Vyasa’s birth; it also marks the day he is believed to have begun writing the Brahma Sutras, a foundational text of Vedanta philosophy. Traditionally, the day is lined with offering seva, or service, to their gurus and beginning new studies, to continue a practice believed to have started with Vyasa himself.
