ICE agents shoot man in California wanted in El Salvador; suspect tried to run over officers

Federal immigration officers from US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) shot a man on Tuesday morning during a law enforcement action in Stanislaus County, California, authorities said. The shooting occurred during a vehicle stop along Interstate 5 near Sperry Avenue in Patterson.The Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that the incident involved ICE agents and that no local law enforcement officers were directly involved in the shooting. A “suspect” was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment following the incident.ICE identified the person shot as Carlos Ivan Mendoza Hernandez. According to a statement by ICE’s acting director, Hernandez is wanted in El Salvador for questioning in connection with a murder.ICE officials said that during the attempted arrest, the man allegedly used his vehicle in an attempt to run over an officer. In response, agents fired shots. The agency described the shooting as defensive.The shooting led to the closure of several on‑ and off‑ramps on Interstate 5 and Sperry Avenue for much of the day. Drivers were warned of major traffic delays and asked to avoid the area.The FBI is involved in the investigation, working alongside federal and local authorities. Officials have not released further details about the condition of the person who was shot.The Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Office first shared information about the incident early Tuesday, noting that the investigation was ongoing and urging residents to stay clear of the affected highway stretch.
