'India has so much talent': Ex-Pak coach exposes why Pakistan are falling behind

NEW DELHI: Former Pakistan Test batter and ex-head coach Haroon Rasheed on Tuesday drew a sharp contrast between the cricketing structures of India and Pakistan, saying India are now enjoying the rewards of long-term planning, strong domestic cricket and a robust age-group system, while Pakistan continue to struggle because of inconsistency and instability.Speaking on hamaraiweb.com, Haroon said Pakistan’s recent performances reflected the deeper issues within the country’s cricket structure. “The recent Test defeats to Bangladesh and even before that in white ball cricket our performances tell the whole story of our cricket,” he said.Haroon, who served the Pakistan Cricket Board in multiple roles including chief selector, coach of senior and junior teams and head of the cricket academy, said India’s system has created an enormous talent pool, particularly in T20 cricket.“Right now India has so much talent to pick from, particularly in T20 cricket. The reason is all their players are coming through a proper system from various age groups.”The former Pakistan batter said the lack of consistency, continuity and planning had severely damaged Pakistan cricket over the years.“I don’t think changing the board chairman so frequently has helped at all. I worked under at least six different chairman at my time in the board and when a new chairman comes in, it means he brings in his own people, policies and mindset,” Haroon said.Haroon also stressed the urgent need to overhaul Pakistan’s domestic structure, warning that other nations were moving ahead rapidly.“In Pakistan there is a dire need to change the domestic structure which has survived competition between association and departmental cricket and come up with a new concept or we will be left behind. Even Bangladesh has now shown how they have improved.”He also questioned the PCB’s repeated captaincy changes, saying constant reshuffling prevented the team from developing stability.“When you decide to appoint a captain in any format it would have been done with much thought process so how can you keep on changing captains, how will this allow the Pakistan team to be consistent and stable,” he questioned.Haroon added that Pakistan had historically performed better under captains who were given long runs in leadership roles and warned that the country risked falling further behind if young players were not groomed properly.“There are a lot of things that need to be put right in Pakistan cricket. Or else we will fall further behind. Because we are not even grooming our young talent properly or giving them the right coaching and exposure to prepare them for long term international cricket.”
