India Pushes Back Toughly Against Pakistan Army Chief’s Kashmir Statement

India has staunchly refuted recent remarks made by Pakistan Army Chief General Asim Munir, who addressed Kashmir as the “jugular vein” of Pakistan. While issuing a statement, India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) asserted that the sole attachment Pakistan has towards Kashmir is an obligation to relinquish the territory it has been occupying illegally.

General Munir’s remarks, which he made during a public speech, also extended a call to Pakistan’s young generation to recall and narrate the history of the country, mainly the theory of a two-nation that resulted in Pakistan’s founding. He asked citizens to narrate the tale of Pakistan’s establishment to coming generations so that a strong national identity was preserved.

MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal, in response, said, “How can anything foreign be in a jugular vein? This is a Union Territory of India. Its only connection with Pakistan is the vacation of illegally occupied territories by that country.”

The exchange serves to illustrate the tensions between India and Pakistan over the Kashmir territory, with both countries claiming and asserting their sovereignty.

This follows increased debates on regional security and the significance of history in the formation of national identities.
