NEW DELHI: For the longest time, KL Rahul’s T20 career has resembled a man dragging a heavy suitcase. Stuffed inside were the perennial anxieties of strike-rates, the exhausting demands of batting deep, and the archaic, heavy tag of being the “anchor”. On Saturday, at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, Rahul simply set the suitcase aside. What followed was a masterclass in calculated authority. Opening the innings for Delhi Capitals against Punjab Kings, Rahul batted through all 20 overs, remaining unbeaten on a staggering 152 off 67 balls. It was Rahul completely unburdened, accessing all parts of the ground not with reckless abandon but with aggressive clarity. In surging past 150, he etched his name into the annals of the format, registering the highest individual T20 score by an Indian and the third highest in IPL history, trailing only Chris Gayle (175*) and Brendon McCullum (158*). This wasn’t an overnight metamorphosis; it was a conscious, arduous shedding of old habits. “I was very pleased at the end of the first 20 overs,” Rahul said. “It’s something that I’ve been working on for a very long time behind the scenes.” The realization that the T20 format had mutated while he was playing classical notes hit him hard. The game had moved on and Rahul knew he had to catch the train. “For now, it is about doing well in the IPL. Just to step back a little and see where the T20 game has gone. There was a time when the T20 game was slightly different, and I, as an opener, could take my time. But today’s demand is that the first six overs are the most important. The Powerplay is to get as many runs as you can and put the bowling team under pressure,” Rahul said. The transformation required rewiring his muscle memory and his mind, entirely shunning the “we’ll make it up later” philosophy. “I had to sit back and see where I was at,” Rahul said. “In T20 cricket, the mindset that I am in right now is that there is no time to say later. There’s time in ODI cricket, but in T20s there’s no time to think you can go next over. I’ve had to work really hard on my mental set-up.” Crucially, Rahul didn’t abandon his “aesthetic” vibe. He didn’t resort to ugly hoicks to bump his strike-rate. “I stuck to being true to my game, which is to play cricketing shots but also find a way to be aggressive and play proper shots,” he said. The focus, therefore, was firmly on early aggression. “I’ve spoken about six hitting and that’s something that I had to really work on and give myself that sort of freedom to go out there and take on the bowling from maybe ball one, ball two,” he said. Even in a bittersweet context, the magnitude of Rahul’s evolution wasn’t lost in the dressing room. Delhi Capitals’ director of cricket, Venugopal Rao, summed up the monumental effort and said, “In this format, you cannot relax. He took responsibility as a senior player, and you are seeing the difference this year in what he can bring. I am happy for him. We could not get the win, but the way he played till the last over, hats off.”
