Maharashtra celebrates Maharashtra Day every year on May 1. It is a significant regional public holiday which marks the formation of the state in 1960. In 2026, the day will be celebrated on Friday, making it a long weekend opportunity for travellers and regional holidaymakers. However, the day also brings many closures and restrictions which is important for visitors to know to plan their day around. This year, May 1 also coincides with Labour Day and Buddha Purnima, making it a public holiday across India. Maharashtra Day celebrates the creation of the state under the Bombay Reorganisation Act, 1960. It was on this day that the state was divided into Maharashtra and Gujarat based on language. It was the Samyukta Maharashtra Movement on whose demand the state was separated and today, it holds a special regional pride, identity, and cultural heritage. Mumbai, the capital of Maharashtra, is the centre of most celebrations. A parade is held at Shivaji Park, attended by all government officials and police units. Cultural performances are held showcasing the beauty of the state.
