Former Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson was admitted to hospital on Sunday after feeling unwell ahead of the club’s Premier League clash against Liverpool FC at Old Trafford. The 84-year-old football legend, who still regularly attends Manchester United matches both home and away, had arrived at the stadium to watch one of English football’s fiercest rivalries when the health scare occurred.According to Sky Sports News, Ferguson was conscious and underwent precautionary medical checks. While the exact nature of the illness has not been disclosed, early reports suggested the situation was not considered serious. News of his hospitalisation quickly sparked concern among football fans around the world, given Ferguson’s legendary status in the sport and his long-standing connection with Manchester United.

Ferguson’s legacy at Manchester United

Ferguson remains one of the most successful football managers in history. He took charge of Manchester United in 1986 and completely transformed the club over the next 27 years. Under his leadership, United became the dominant team in English football and one of the most feared clubs in Europe.During his tenure, Ferguson guided the club to 13 Premier League titles and two UEFA Champions League trophies. One of his greatest achievements came in 1999 when Manchester United won a historic treble — the Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League in the same season.Even after retiring from management in 2013, Ferguson remained closely linked to the club and continued serving as a club ambassador until 2025.

Success beyond Old Trafford

Apart from his achievements at Manchester United, Ferguson also enjoyed success in Scotland with Aberdeen FC, where he won three league titles and four Scottish Cups. He also managed Scotland national football team at the 1986 FIFA World Cup and had spells with St Mirren earlier in his managerial career. Before becoming a world-famous manager, Ferguson played as a forward and was the top scorer in the Scottish Division One during the 1965-66 season.
