Meet Otto, the new member of British royal family who just turned 1

Prince William and Kate just introduced the world to their latest family member. Meet Otto, an English cocker spaniel who turned one year old on May 1st. The couple shared the news on social media with a simple, heartwarming caption: “Welcome to the family, Otto! 1 today.“The photo shows a fluffy, adorable pup looking straight at the camera with wind-swept ears, the kind of picture that makes you want to reach through your screen and pet him. And honestly, the internet has already fallen for him. Comments flooded in from people absolutely charmed by the newest royal addition, with everyone from casual followers to fellow dog lovers gushing over how cute he is. he’s got a lovely coat on him, looks like the wind is blowing through it. pretty setting too, is that where you normally take him for walks?, asks one X user. “Joined the family and already celebrated like royalty,” wrote another. This is Otto’s official debut to the world, his formal introduction as a full-fledged member of the royal household. The timing is sweet. William and Kate just celebrated their 15th wedding anniversary on April 29th, just two days before introducing Otto. The couple met back at St. Andrews University in Scotland, got engaged in 2010, and married at Westminster Abbey the following year. Fifteen years later, they’re still very much a working family, three kids, school runs, pets that need feeding, all the normal stuff except, you know, with a bit more media attention.Otto fills a space left by Lupo, William and Kate’s beloved spaniel who passed away in November 2020 after nine years with the family. The royal family has always had dogs, of course. It’s kind of their thing. The late Queen Elizabeth II famously bred corgis, starting with one called Susan when the Queen turned 18 back in 1944. From there, she developed an entire lineage of corgis, plus some “dorgis,” which are apparently a cross between dachshunds and corgis. So there’s actual royal pedigree when it comes to dog ownership in this family.

Cocker Spaniels

If you’re thinking about getting a dog and someone mentions cocker spaniels, just know they’re saying that for a reason. These dogs are genuinely great family pets. They’ve got energy, they’re affectionate, and they actually seem to enjoy being around people, which isn’t true for every breed.Originally bred as hunting dogs, they’ve still got that drive in them. They need walks, playtime, or they’ll get bored and cause trouble. But if you’re the type who likes being active, they’re perfect. They’ll be up for whatever you’re doing. The real appeal though is their personality. They’re not aloof or standoffish. They want to be part of your life, following you from room to room like they might miss something if they don’t. And they’re smart enough to train without being stubborn about it. Most of them are genuinely eager to please, which makes a huge difference.Fair warning: their ears need regular cleaning, and their coat requires maintenance. You’re not looking at a low-maintenance dog here. But if you’ve got the time and you want a dog that’s loyal, playful, and actually happy to see you when you get home, a cocker spaniel might be exactly what you’re looking for.
