Mumbai airport to remain shut for 6 hours on May 7 because of this reason; what travellers should know

In a recent update, Mumbai airport has announced that it will remain shut for six hours on May 7, 2026. Therefore, travellers are advised to double check their flight status at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA). All the operations will remain suspended for a short time due to scheduled maintenance work. The temporary shutdown is announced in advance so that travellers can plan ahead. The maintenance is expected to impact both domestic and international flights.The airport’s official website reads:“On 7 May 2026, both runways (09/27 and 14/32) at Mumbai Airport will be temporarily non-operational from 11:00hrs to 17:00hrs for scheduled pre-monsoon maintenance and repair work. We appreciate your understanding and cooperation.”What travellers should know:As per airport authorities, operations at Mumbai’s primary aviation hub will remain completely halted from 11 AM to 5 PM on Thursday. During this time, no flights will take off or land, as both runways, 09/27 (primary) and 14/32 (secondary) will remain shut for pre-monsoon maintenance.It is an annual planned closure which takes place before monsoon for safety. It is an important measure in a city that experiences intense rainfall during the monsoon season. During this time, engineers carry out runway inspections, and check for drainage systems. They also ensure safe aircraft operations in the coming months. As per officials, the maintenance is “non-negotiable” given Mumbai’s heavy rains. It can affect runway grip and aircraft braking performance if preventive work is not undertaken timely. Flights cancelled, rescheduled; passengers advised caution

The six-hour shutdown is expected to trigger widespread flight cancellations, delays, and rescheduling. However, airlines were notified months in advance to adjust schedules. Mumbai Airport, one of the busiest in countryMumbai airport is among the country’s busiest aviation hubs. The airport handles over hundreds of flights on a daily basis. The six-hour shutdown is one of the most significant planned disruptions in recent months which airlines were already informed about. However, the closure is required for pre- and post-monsoon maintenance exercises. For travellers, it is important to plan ahead and stay informed. If you are flying via Mumbai on May 7, expect schedule changes and possible congestion.
