TFPC announces token strike despite Nadigar Sangam talks; halts shootings over actor salary dispute across Tamil cinema today

The Tamil Film Producers Council (TFPC) officially announced a token strike on May 2, 2026, sparking a major discussion across the Tamil film industry. The producers body cited the reason for decision owing to the hefty salaries of leading actors and technicians over the last three years. According to the council, many producers now face huge financial losses and struggle to continue making films. Despite repeated requests and discussions with the Nadigar Sangam, the issue reportedly remains unresolved. The producers council decided to move ahead with the strike to draw attention to the growing financial pressure in the industry.

TFPC pushes for a revenue share salary model

The producers council has been requesting top actors and technicians to follow a “Revenue Share” salary system instead of demanding large fixed payments. Under this model, stars and technicians would receive a share of the film’s profits after release. Producers believe this system can reduce financial risks and help more films succeed commercially. The council also pointed out that this model has already been followed successfully in the Hindi film industry for many years by stars like Aamir Khan, Salman Khan, Shah Rukh Khan, Akshay Kumar, and Ajay Devgn. Similar practices are also reportedly followed by several leading actors in Telugu cinema.

Producers say Tamil filmmakers are facing huge losses

According to the TFPC, many Tamil producers cannot recover from losses after one failed film. The council stated that, unlike in some other industries, leading stars and technicians rarely support struggling Tamil producers after a project fails. Producers also claimed that several actors prioritize projects from other language industries while local producers continue to face financial problems. Because of this situation, many small and medium producers are reportedly unable to start new projects. The council said the token strike is meant to highlight these serious concerns and encourage healthy discussions within the industry.

No shootings or post-production work during the strike

As part of the token strike, no film shootings or post-production work will take place today across Tamil cinema. The Tamil Film Active Producers Association has extended full support to the protest. The TFPC also thanked FEFSI and several cinema unions for cooperating with the strike announcement. Producers are now hoping that leading actors and technicians will understand the seriousness of the issue and come forward for talks soon. The council believes that only proper discussions and mutual understanding can help bring a smooth solution and improve the future of Tamil cinema production.
