What are Oyster Mushrooms?

Oyster mushrooms are edible fungi that usually grow on decaying wood in forests. They have a soft, fan‑shaped cap and a mild, slightly sweet flavour that works well in many Indian and other global dishes. With their short growth cycle and easy care, oyster mushrooms are now a favourite for first‑time mushroom growers.

Why Oyster Mushrooms are worth growing

Oyster mushrooms are rich in protein, fibre, vitamins, and essential minerals. Because of their health benefits, many households now grow small batches for regular use. At the same time, the low cost of production and steady yields also make them attractive for small‑scale earnings, especially for homemakers, and gardening fanatics. Many viral videos show simple and easy steps to easily grow mushrooms at home in simple, easy and budget friendly steps

How to grow Oyster mushrooms at home, here are some easy steps:

Pick up the required basic materials and preparation

You need simple, inexpensive materials, like wheat straw or dried grass, mushroom spawn or the “seed”, clean water, polythene bags, and find a suitable shaded indoor space protected from direct sunlight.Start by cutting the straw into small pieces and soaking it in water for 12–24 hours to soften it. Then drain it so the straw is moist but not dripping.

Layering and incubation

Pack the wet straw into clean polythene bags using a layering method: One layer of straw, then a sprinkle of spawn, repeating until the bag is full. Tie the bag and make small holes around it by priking some holes in the bag, which will let the mushrooms grow out later.

Setting it in the right place

Place the bags in a dark, clean room where the temperature stays between 25–30°C. Spray a light mist of water once a day, avoiding puddles.

Within 10–15 days, the straw turns white with mycelium, and tiny buds appear at the holes. At this stage, allow a little soft light and gentle airflow.Harvest the mushrooms in 20–30 days, before the caps fully open, for best taste and texture. Each bag usually gives 2–3 harvests, making oyster mushrooms an efficient and rewarding garden crop.
