Quote of the day by Neem Karoli Baba: “Forgiveness is the greatest weapon, because a saint so armed is unperturbable… he can give up anger immediately.”
Anger often lingers after perceived slights, but spiritual leader Neem Karoli Baba offered a powerful perspective: forgiveness is the ultimate weapon. He taught that true strength lies not in retaliation, but in the ability to release anger, becoming unshakeable. This practice, though challenging, liberates individuals from the burden of grudges, fostering inner peace and resilience.

Think about the last time someone really got on your nerves, through a rude message, a broken promise, or a friend who vanished when you needed them. The anger gets on the head immediately, and it likes to stay. We also keep replaying the moment, keep thinking what we could have replied instead, and carry the weight long after the other person has moved on.But there’s another perspective to this, that suggests the strongest person in any room is not the one who hits back rudely, sharply, or in anger, but the one who can set the anger down and walk away unbothered. This might not sound like a big deal, but when brought in practice, it is one of the hardest things a person can learn to do.Maharaj Ji Neem Karoli Baba shed light on this beautiful thought through his priceless words. He did not see forgiveness as weakness or as a favour to the person who hurt you. He saw it as power.

Quote of the day

Forgiveness is the greatest weapon, because a saint so armed is unperturbable… he can give up anger immediately

Neem Karoli Baba

What does the quote really mean?

At first glance, calling forgiveness a “weapon” seems contradictory, as weapons are for attack and forgiveness feels like surrender. But Maharaj-ji gives a unique perspective to this idea. A weapon makes you hard to defeat, and so does forgiveness. The line says a saint armed with it becomes “unperturbable,” or impossible to shake. If nothing can provoke you into anger, then no insult, slight, or betrayal can quietly control you. You stop handing other people the remote for your own peace of mind.

Why do people think that anger is strength?

Anger gives us a rush. It feels like power, like we are finally standing up for ourselves. The catch is that anger keeps us tied to whoever caused it. We lose sleep, write down furious replies, and argue with people. In the meantime, the other person may have forgotten the whole thing. Maharaj-ji’s point is that real strength is the ability to drop anger and keep things under control, to feel it rise in that very moment and then choose to put it back down.

Who was Neem Karoli Baba?

Neem Karoli Baba, popularly called Maharaj-ji, lived from around 1900 to 11 September 1973 and was a devotee of Hanumanji. He never wrote books or gave grand lectures, but people simply described feeling changed in his presence. This particular quote comes from Miracle of Love, a collection of stories about him written by his American disciple Ram Dass. His ashram at Kainchi Dham, near Nainital in Uttarakhand, later drew seekers including Steve Jobs and Mark Zuckerberg.

Turning forgiveness into a habit

None of this means swallowing your feelings or letting people walk over you. Forgiveness is mostly for your own benefit, or a way to stop carrying weight that no longer gives you anything back.We can all begin with little steps, maybe just pausing before firing back or asking whether the grudge is costing you more than the original hurt did. Even though Maharaj-ji made it sound effortless, for the rest of us, it is a practice, but one that is worth keeping.
