Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs’s release date moved up again ahead of appeal hearing: What’s happening?

TRIGGER WARNING: This article includes references to sexual abuse and other sensitive details. Reader discretion is advised.Sean “Diddy” Combs used to be one of the biggest names in music and business. He built Bad Boy Records, raked in millions through fashion and liquor, and pretty much seemed untouchable. But now, he’s caught up in a legal mess that’s got everyone watching. His life flipped fast from the heights of fame to facing federal charges and a prison sentence. In the latest update on that case, just days before a big appeal hearing, Combs’ release date got bumped up again. Although it’s not a huge shift (just 10 days), it matters. Here’s everything we know about how it happened.

Sean Diddy Combs’ release date moved up again: What’s changed?

So, what’s the deal with this new release date? People reported, according to the Federal Bureau of Prisons, Combs will get out on April 15, 2028. That’s 10 days sooner than his previous date of April 25, 2028 and much earlier than the original June 4, 2028. It’s been all over the place. Last December, his release was pushed from May to June, then moved up to April in March.

Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs Sentenced To 50 Months In Prison

Right now, Combs is serving a 50-month sentence. He was convicted last summer on two counts related to transporting people for prostitution after a high-profile trial in New York. The jury cleared him of heavier charges, such as sex trafficking and racketeering conspiracy, which could’ve landed him in prison for life. Before his sentence, Combs spent about a year locked up in Brooklyn’s Metropolitan Detention Center. He wasn’t granted bail. Prosecutors wanted him behind bars for more than a decade, but his legal team argued he shouldn’t get more than 14 months, pointing to what they saw as partial vindication. Now he’s at FCI Fort Dix in New Jersey, about 40 miles from Philly. His attorneys pushed for this location, saying it’s close to his family and offers drug rehab programs. “In order to address drug abuse issues and maximize family visitation and rehabilitation, we request that the court strongly recommend FCI Fort Dix,” his lawyer, Teny Geragos, wrote back in October 2025, as per the same report. Combs has since joined a drug rehab program, which could shave more time off his sentence if he behaves. But the story’s not closed. Last December, Combs’ lawyers filed an appeal, saying the sexual encounters at the center of the case were consensual and arguing the judge gave him too harsh a sentence. On February 20, federal prosecutors shot back in court, claiming Combs was a repeat offender who used violence and threats. He was convicted under the Mann Act, a federal law that bans transporting people across state lines for prostitution. The trial lasted eight weeks. Cassie Ventura, Combs’ ex-girlfriend, and another woman (testifying anonymously) said he orchestrated drug-fueled sexual encounters, so-called “freak-offs,” with paid male escorts. Prosecutors say Combs arranged travel for the men, sometimes cross-country or even internationally, and used control and coercion in his relationships.Prosecutors told the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit that the judge got it right, weighing how Combs treated the women. “According to Combs, the district court should have closed its eyes to how he carried out his Mann Act offenses and abused his victims, violently beating them, threatening them, lying to them, and plying them with drugs,” they wrote.Combs’ defense team is fighting back hard, insisting everything was consensual and that prosecutors didn’t prove their toughest claims. They say the judge relied too much on findings that the women were coerced or forced, even though the jury didn’t reach that conclusion. On March 13, Combs’ lawyers called his long sentence a “perversion of justice” in their appeal, demanding immediate release, acquittal, or at least a new sentencing hearing.

More about Sean Diddy Combs

Before everything got messy, people saw Diddy as one of the architects of modern hip-hop and R&B. He launched Bad Boy Records, discovered and produced for stars like The Notorious B.I.G. and Mary J. Blige, and helped shape the sound of the ’90s. Diddy didn’t stop at music, either; he built a massive business empire stretching into fashion, TV, and the liquor industry. However, all that changed in the last few years. Diddy’s reputation took a huge hit with a wave of lawsuits and allegations, and the prison sentence followed. As for now, the oral arguments for the appeal are set for April 9.
