NEW DELHI: When will Vaibhav Sooryavanshi make his India debut? When will the 15-year-old don the senior India jersey? Could he find a place in the squad for the upcoming T20Is against Ireland? Those questions have dominated discussions ever since the teenage batting sensation took the cricketing world by storm. Sooryavanshi played a pivotal role in India’s Under-19 World Cup triumph, smashing a record-breaking 175 off just 80 balls as India clinched a record sixth title. He carried that stunning form into IPL 2026, amassing 776 runs in 16 matches at a staggering strike rate of 237.31. The youngster also smashed a tournament-record 72 sixes. The 15-year-old earned widespread praise for his fearless batting against some of the world’s leading bowlers, including Jasprit Bumrah, Kagiso Rabada and Pat Cummins. His remarkable exploits have fuelled growing calls for his inclusion in the senior national side, with many believing he should be fast-tracked into India’s squad for the upcoming tour of Ireland. India are scheduled to play two T20Is against Ireland in Belfast on June 26 and June 28.BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia praised Sooryavanshi’s extraordinary rise and expressed confidence that his performances would not go unnoticed by the selectors.“Vaibhav is a new wonder kid in Indian cricket, and I’m sure he will also take the world by storm in the coming days. And all our selectors are part of the IPL tournament. Everybody, all the selectors are watching these matches very closely, and in most cases, they are also present at the venue,” Saikia told Hindustan Times.“So, in the upcoming selection meetings for the Indian team’s UK trip, I’m sure the selectors will do whatever is necessary and is in his best interest, given the way he has performed,” he said.“Many other players performed exceedingly well. But Vaibhav is exceptional, and I am very happy that God is kind, that a new wonder kid has been presented to the Indian cricket scene at this stage, and that he will definitely cross the boundaries very soon,” Saikia added.Following the Ireland series, India will travel to England for a white-ball tour comprising five T20Is and three ODIs.
