How new-ball bowlers can become the real trump card in the contest of power-hitters

NEW DELHI: It will be a battle of fearless batting and ruthless hitting when Sunrisers Hyderabad take on Rajasthan Royals in the IPL 2026 Eliminator at Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in New Chandigarh on Wednesday. Despite the tournament being dominated by batters, the knockout clash could ultimately be decided by the bowlers who strike early with the new ball. The stakes could not be higher. The loser becomes the first team to crash out of the playoffs, while the winner stays alive for another shot at reaching the final. The two teams reached the playoffs through contrasting routes. RR began the season in sensational fashion, winning their first four matches and looking like early title favourites. SRH, meanwhile, managed just one win from their opening four games before turning their season around dramatically. While RR won only two of their next eight games and slipped into trouble midway through the campaign, SRH surged with six wins in the same phase, including a five-match winning streak. They also completed a double over RR during the league stage — once defending 216 and once chasing down 229 with ease. Both teams then sealed playoff qualification with commanding victories in their final two league games. SRH eventually finished third, level on points with the top two teams, while RR snatched fourth place after overtaking Punjab Kings with a win in the final league game against Mumbai Indians.

Power-hitters set the stage for another run-fest

IPL 2026 has been one of the most batting-friendly seasons in league history. The average winning total during the league stage was an astonishing 217.57, while the average first-innings score climbed to a record 192.04.Even scores beyond 200 have not felt safe, with a win-loss ratio of just 19-16 for teams crossing the 200-mark. Even totals above 220 were chased down nine times this season — compared to just five such successful chases across the previous 18 IPL editions combined. That trend makes another batting shootout highly likely in Mullanpur.SRH have been one of the most destructive batting units in the competition, posting nine totals of 200 or more this season. At the heart of their batting explosion has been opener Abhishek Sharma, who has smashed 563 runs at a stunning strike rate of 206.22.On the RR side, teenage sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has emerged as one of the biggest stories of the season. The opener has blasted 583 runs at an incredible strike rate of 232.27 and has often changed matches within the powerplay itself.Stopping these two explosive openers early could shape the entire contest.

Heinrich Klaasen 606 69 159.5 50.50
Ishan Kishan 569 91 178.4 43.77
Abhishek Sharma 563 135 206.2 43.31
Travis Head 393 76 168.7 28.07
Nitish Reddy 264 56 169.2 29.33

SRH, however, appear slightly more secure in terms of batting depth. Heinrich Klaasen has enjoyed another outstanding season with 606 runs, while Ishan Kishan has contributed 569 runs at a strike rate nearing 180. Travis Head has also provided crucial firepower at the top.RR’s batting has revolved more around Sooryavanshi’s brilliance, although Dhruv Jurel and Yashasvi Jaiswal have consistently chipped in with valuable runs heading into the playoffs. If all the big hitters continue their current form, another high-scoring thriller could be on the cards.

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi 583 103 232.3 41.64
Dhruv Jurel 458 81 149.7 38.17
Yashasvi Jaiswal 397 77 159.4 33.08
Riyan Parag 272 90 152.8 24.73
Donovan Ferreira 267 69 170.1 33.38

Why the new-ball bowlers could decide the Eliminator

For all the focus on batting, the biggest weakness for both teams lies in the same area — their middle order has barely been tested under pressure this season.Their top-order batters have dominated so heavily that the lower middle order has rarely been forced into rescue acts. That is where the new-ball bowlers could completely change the match.RR arguably hold the edge because of Jofra Archer‘s form. The England pacer comes into the Eliminator after a match-winning all-round display in RR’s final league game, smashing 32 off 15 balls before taking 3/17 vs MI.Archer has taken 21 wickets this season, with 11 of them coming in the powerplay. His ability to strike early against aggressive openers could prove decisive against SRH’s ultra-attacking batting lineup.Left-arm pacer Nandre Burger has also been highly effective with the new ball, claiming six of his 11 wickets inside the powerplay. If RR can remove two or more of SRH’s top-order batters early, they could expose an under-tested middle order featuring Nitish Kumar Reddy and Salil Arora, both of whom are yet to hit peak form this season.

Balls Wickets Econ.
Jofra Archer 175 11 8.61
Nandre Burger 132 6 10.00
Ravi Bishnoi 18 3 6.67
Sandeep Sharma 54 2 10.33
Brijesh Sharma 61 1 10.72

The same vulnerability exists for RR too.Sooryavanshi’s fearless approach means he is unlikely to slow down irrespective of conditions or opposition. But SRH’s attack has become far more dangerous since the return of captain Pat Cummins.Alongside Cummins, SRH possess wicket-taking options in Eshan Malinga and Sakib Hussain. If they can dismiss Sooryavanshi or Jaiswal early, RR’s middle order suddenly looks vulnerable.Captain Riyan Parag is yet to find his best rhythm this season, while Donovan Ferreira has struggled for consistency. Even Ravindra Jadeja has found it difficult to accelerate regularly in the death overs. That makes the first six overs the defining phase of the Eliminator.

Which team looks stronger in batting depth ahead of the Eliminator?

Balls Wickets Econ.
Praful Hinge 60 6 11.60
Eshan Malinga 108 5 8.33
Pat Cummins 79 3 10.33
Nitish Kumar Reddy 67 3 10.12
Sakib Hussain 55 3 8.84

In a season ruled by sixes, 200-plus totals and record chases, the knockout clash between SRH and RR may ultimately come down to something far simpler — which new-ball attack can strike first and drag the opposition out of its comfort zone.
