Steve Carell returns to TV comedy with ‘Rooster’, his first lead sitcom since ‘The Office’

Steve Carell is back in the comedy spotlight with the new series ‘Rooster’. The show brings him together alongside a talented ensemble in this heartfelt story about fatherhood and family dynamics. In the series in question, Steve Carell plays a devoted dad navigating campus chaos, and he recently shared why this project pulled him back to television laughs after years away.

‘Rooster’: Plot overview

In ‘Rooster’, Steve Carell stars as Greg Russo, a successful author who lands a writer-in-residence gig at a posh university. His real motive is to support his daughter, a professor facing a rocky marriage and personal struggles. The series blends humor with heart as Greg’s well-meaning efforts spark awkward clashes with academic life. Co-creator Matt Tarses crafted the role to highlight Carell’s dramatic strengths, steering clear of over-the-top antics.

Reluctant return to comedy

Steve Carell had stepped back from lead comedy roles since ‘The Office’, but ‘Rooster’ changed that. When Bill Lawrence invited him to help write the pilot, Carell politely declined. He told The National, “He asked me: ‘Do you want to help write it?’ And I said, ‘Nope.’” Carell raved about the script right away. He called it “one of the best comedy pilots I’ve read, period” in a People magazine interview. The story’s authenticity hooked him fast.

Trust in his team

A big draw for Steve Carell was Bill Lawrence, known for big hits like ‘Ted Lasso’ and ‘Scrubs’. Carell praised Lawrence’s character beyond his talent. “He’s funny, he’s very intelligent, and more than anything, he’s a really kind person,” Carell said before adding, “That’s the kind of person I want to work with.” He valued the collaborative vibe on set, where “everybody feels represented and seen.” This trust allowed Carell to focus on acting without script duties.Unlike his bumbling Michael Scott, Greg Russo brings nuance to Steve Carell’s comedy. Tarses noted, “He’s smart, and he has some dignity.” The laughs come from Greg feeling like an outsider among professors and students. Lawrence explained they tapped Carell’s serious side for grounded humor, making messy family moments feel real.‘Rooster’ shines with its ensemble, including Charly Clive as Carell’s daughter, Phil Dunster, John C. McGinley, Alan Ruck, and Danielle Deadwyler. Lawrence urged actors to shape their characters, fostering authentic on-screen bonds. The series premiered on HBO Max in early March 2026 and is available on OSN+ in regions such as the Middle East.
