The great toilet debate: Is closing the lid actually keeping your bathroom cleaner?
Forget the toilet seat debate; the real germ culprit is the flush. Flushing creates an aerosolized mist that spreads bacteria, with floors being the most contaminated.

This is one of those classic arguments that can be made between couples or even when rules come into play for hesitant parents. Is it more respectful to have the toilet seat up or down? This is usually just an argument over courtesy; however, under the guise of courtesy lies a deeper issue of cleanliness. We usually close the seat to make sure everything stays clean; however, modern science has revealed that our bathroom bacteria don’t follow such strict guidelines. We frequently envision the toilet seat to be the ultimate place harbouring pathogens that can make us sick; however, the idea requires further consideration. Understanding the behaviour of these organisms in the bathroom environment can make a huge difference in our daily habits. The truth behind the “dirty seat” assumptionThe common belief regarding a toilet seat is that it harbours many potentially lethal germs and bacteria. But a study carried out in the Journal of Home Economics of Japan showed that the bacterial flora on the toilet seat was quite minimal in public washrooms. Most of the microorganisms were harmless skin-related ones, not the feared faecal ones we imagine. Also, there were some seasonal variations in terms of counts, being high during the wet season. The action really begins when you flush the toilet. This flushing generates what is known as a toilet plume, which is an aerosolised cloud of droplets that can potentially harbour viruses and bacteria and move around in the air. Many people think that by closing the lid, they will prevent this aerosolisation, but scientific findings in the American Journal of Infection Control on the “air gap phenomenon” prove otherwise.

Clean Surfaces: A Microscopic View

Closing the lid helps, but thorough cleaning with disinfectants and attention to the floor are crucial for true bathroom hygiene. Don’t linger on the toilet, and always clean after flushing.

In the study, even with such measures in place, the lid may not completely prevent the spread of germs; rather, it may help reduce their amount by at least half compared to flushing with the toilet lid raised. Smaller particles, such as viruses, are known to move through gaps between the seat and toilet lid much more easily than large particles, such as bacteria. Therefore, even with the lid down, there will always be some risk since the germs will eventually settle either on the floor or in other areas, for example, towels or a nearby toothbrush.Cleanliness of the surroundings, and why the floor should not be forgottenIf the toilet seat is not the main source of contamination, then where does the problem occur? In most cases, the floors are more contaminated than other areas of a residential bathroom because gravity draws the aerosols to settle on them. Consequently, the only way to ensure hygiene in the bathroom is to pay attention to more areas than just the bowl of the toilet when cleaning. To stay ahead of the germs, scientists recommend using effective disinfectants. The above-mentioned research shows that certain compounds are particularly effective at reducing viral contamination if left to sit for a sufficient amount of time. Even simple mechanical cleaning, like using a wet wipe to physically remove microbes from the seat and rim, can make a massive difference in keeping the environment safe.Posture is important, and so is sanitation. You have invited yourself to danger if you take too much time on the toilet, like browsing through your phone while sitting there. The hard seat can cause added stress to deeper tissue areas, making it difficult for people with restricted movement to enjoy good blood flow to their buttocks. The discussion on “up or down” may never be concluded at the dinner table, but the truth is there nonetheless. Make sure that the toilet lid is down to prevent any spray, after which you can mop the bathroom floor while letting the disinfectant work its magic. A spotless bathroom goes beyond the surface; it’s all about getting rid of invisible mists after each flush.
