'The Kerala Story 2' gets U/A rating; Vipul Amrutlal Shah thanks board for 'their faith': 'It allows us to reach young girls and families'
‘The Kerala Story 2’ has received a U/A certificate from the CBFC, despite its sensitive theme. Inspired by true incidents, the film focuses on forced conversions. While producer Vipul Amrutlal Shah expressed gratitude for the certification, Kerala CM Pinarayi Vijayan criticized it as “propaganda.” Directed by Kamakhya Narayan Singh, it releases on February 27, 2026.

The trailer of ‘The Kerala Story 2’ received mixed reactions since its release. The movie received a U/A certificate by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), which allows viewers aged 14 and above to watch it. Usually, films with sensitive subjects like ‘The Kerala Story 2’ get an ‘A’ certificate, which is meant only for adults. The filmmakers are pleased that the CBFC granted their movie a more lenient U/A rating.

‘The Kerala Story 2’ inspired by true incidents

Centered on the lives of young women caught in forced conversion rackets, The ‘Kerala Story 2’ takes inspiration from real incidents documented within India’s legal system. The film, scheduled to hit theatres next week, has been cleared by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) with a U/A rating, as reported by Hindustan Times. Sharing his thoughts on the certification with the publication, producer Vipul Amrutlal Shah says, “I am truly grateful to the Censor Board for granting a UA certificate to our film. It reflects their faith in the intent and integrity with which we have told this story. This decision is especially important because it allows us to reach young girls and families across the country.”

‘The Kerala Story 2’ faces political criticism

‘The Kerala Story 2’, directed by Kamakhya Narayan Singh, has sparked controversy over its portrayal of religious conversions. Many viewers believe the film amplifies certain events beyond reality. Responding to the debate, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan denounced the movie, labelling it “poisonous propaganda.” In his official statement released on Wednesday, he said, “We must collectively reject attempts to portray Kerala, a land of religious harmony that stands at the forefront of sustainable development and is a model in maintaining law and order, as a center of terrorism. It is the responsibility of each of us to ensure that Kerala’s secular foundation is not undermined by false propaganda and to reject it by upholding the values of secularism and brotherhood.”

Vipul Amrutlal Shah defends the purpose of ‘The Kerala Story 2’

However, Vipul Amrutlal Shah insists that the purpose of the film is purely to raise awareness. “Our objective has always been awareness, to inform, and to empower young minds to stay alert and make informed choices. I sincerely thank the Board (CBFC) for their fair and thoughtful consideration in enabling this message to reach the next generation,” he adds.
