As per Hindu religious books, Matsya or fish is considered the first avatar of Lord Vishnu. It marks the beginning of the Dashavatara or the 10 divine incarnations of Vishnu. The story finds mention in ancient texts like the Rig Veda, Shatapatha Brahmana, and Bhagavata Purana, among others. Legend has it that King Manu, also known as the progenitor of humanity, once saw a tiny fish trying to save itself. The king took the fish in and nurtured it. The fish started growing and eventually revealed itself as Lord Vishnu. It warned Manu about an upcoming destruction or (Pralaya) strong enough to destroy all life. The fish then asked Manu to build a big boat and collect sages, seeds, and life forms. When the flood came, the divine fish guided the boat to safety.
