World’s largest gold mines: USA, Uzbekistan, Russia and others

Nevada Gold Mines, United States

Despite its production levels falling slightly in 2025 from those recorded in 2024, Nevada Gold Mines still holds the title of being the biggest gold mining operation worldwide, with an annual output of 2,595 thousand ounces of gold. This gold mining operation is a partnership between Barrick Mining and Newmont and comprises several open pits and underground mining projects located in the state of Nevada. In spite of a reduction in output, which was occasioned by changes made in some of the pits and underground areas, Nevada Gold Mines continues to be the most productive gold mining project worldwide.

Muruntau, Uzbekistan

The production figure for Muruntau for the year 2025 stood at 1,708 thousand ounces, making it the second-largest gold mine globally. The mine is operated by the Navoi Mining and Metallurgy Company, and it is considered to be one of the largest open-pit gold mines in the world. In the past years, the mine of Muruntau has served as a crucial component of the mining industry of Uzbekistan. The production capacity of the mine increased slightly in the year 2025 due to improved efficiency.

Olimpiada, Russia

Gold Mine Olimpiada, which is under Polyus company, produced 1,357 thousand ounces of gold in 2025. It is located in Siberia in the region of Krasnoyarsk. The mine is known to have extreme weather conditions that affect the mining process. The mining operations were lower compared to those recorded in the previous year, mainly due to differences in ore quality and output. Moreover, the mine uses highly advanced technology in processing sulphide ores.

Kazzinc Consolidated, Kazakhstan

In 2025, the company Kazzinc Consolidated extracted 947 thousand ounces, making it the fourth largest producer in the world. The company’s mine is a huge complex with an integrated approach to extracting different metals like gold, zinc, and copper. The higher position in the world rankings is attributed to a rise in production capacity and changes in processes at the company’s plants. The company is connected to Glencore and keeps improving its business model, which involves selling metals differently.

Grasberg, Indonesia

Grasberg yielded 937 thousand ounces in 2025, although there were sharp declines in production from the previous year. This particular operation is run by Freeport-McMoRan together with its partners who are linked with the Indonesian government. There was an interruption in production due to the occurrence of a mudslide in late 2025 that caused temporary closures of the facilities. It affected mining and processing operations as well.

Almalyk Complex, Uzbekistan

Almalyk Mining and Metallurgical Complex had an output of 750 thousand ounces in 2025, demonstrating a stable performance in relation to its output in comparison to the preceding year. This mining plant is considered to be one of the largest industrial enterprises of Uzbekistan and also takes the leading position in copper mining. The enterprise consists of large-scale processing facilities and mining facilities.

Blagodatnoye, Russia

Blagodatnoye recorded 736 thousand ounces in 2025, showing a strong increase compared to 2024. Operated by Polyus, the mine benefited from expanded processing capacity and improved ore grades. The introduction of additional milling infrastructure significantly boosted throughput levels. Located in Russia, the operation is part of a wider mining cluster that supports consistent production growth.

Detour Lake, Canada

Detour Lake Mine yielded 693 thousand ounces of gold during the year 2025, which was a marginal improvement compared to its output in the preceding year. Owned by Agnico Eagle Mines, this is one of the biggest open-pit gold mines in Canada. This mine enjoys the advantages of high-reserve life and massive processing capacity. During 2025, enhanced operations performance and rising prices of gold resulted in improved financial performance.

Kibali, Democratic Republic of Congo

Kibali yielded 673 thousand ounces, marking a small drop from the previous year. Kibali is owned equally by Barrick Mining Company, AngloGold Ashanti, and the Congolese state-owned partner company. It ranks among the biggest gold mines in Africa and features both underground and open-pit mines. Explorations for new ore bodies are still ongoing. Although there have been slight changes in production volumes, Kibali still plays a key role in African gold production and qualifies as a Tier-1 asset.

Ahafo, Ghana

The Ahafo Mine had a total output of 664 thousand ounces in 2025 and ranked tenth among the mines globally. The mine is mainly run by Newmont, with Ghana’s government having a smaller stake. Output was lower in comparison to that of 2024 because of deliberate changes in operations and mine sequencing.
