Two-time champions West Indies have missed out on direct qualification for the ICC Men’s ODI World Cup 2027, meaning the former powerhouse will once again have to navigate the qualifiers to reach the 50-over showpiece.West Indies’ fate was sealed after Afghanistan defeated Ireland by 92 runs in the rain-affected second ODI of their five-match series at Bready Cricket Club on Friday. The result guaranteed Afghanistan a direct place at the 2027 World Cup and left West Indies unable to break into the direct qualification places before the September 30, 2026 cut-off.The 2027 tournament will be staged across South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia in October-November, with matches spread across 12 venues.

Third straight World Cup without direct entry

The setback extends a worrying trend for West Indies cricket. The two-time champions also failed to secure direct qualification for the 2019 and 2023 editions. They successfully came through the qualifiers in 2019, but suffered a stunning setback four years later when they were eliminated in the 2023 World Cup qualifiers and missed the main tournament in India. The West Indies will now have to go through the qualification route once again if they are to feature in the 2027 edition.Under the qualification system, co-hosts South Africa and Zimbabwe have automatic places. The remaining seven direct spots are determined by the ICC ODI rankings, with the rankings cut-off set for September 30, 2026.West Indies are currently 10th in the ODI rankings, behind Afghanistan in eighth and Bangladesh in ninth. Zimbabwe, ranked 11th, already have an automatic place as co-hosts.That effectively means West Indies cannot move into the required top-nine bracket before the deadline.

India series cannot change West Indies’ fate

West Indies will have one final major ODI assignment before the cut-off when they travel to India for a three-match series in September and October. The first two games are scheduled for Thiruvananthapuram on September 27 and Guwahati on September 30.However, even winning both matches will not be enough to take West Indies into the direct qualification places, leaving their World Cup fate dependent on the qualifiers. For a side that once dominated the global 50-over game, another qualification campaign represents a stark reminder of the distance West Indies cricket has travelled from its former heights.

Ireland also forced into qualifiers

Ireland have also lost their direct qualification opportunity. The Irish side needed to sweep their five-match series against Afghanistan 5-0 to remain in contention. Their hopes suffered an immediate blow when the opening ODI in Bready was washed out on August 5, before Afghanistan’s 92-run victory in the second game effectively ended Ireland’s hopes. With Afghanistan now assured of a direct World Cup place, West Indies and Ireland will have to take the longer route to South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia.
