As pets become cherished family members, the demand for reliable care while owners are away has surged. Professional pet sitting, born from a need for better in-home care than informal arrangements, emerged in the 1980s.

Pets are our go-to buddies and share an equal part as family members. They have gone from backyard buddies to full-on family stars, and we surely love every tail wag we get after a long day at work.Who doesn’t melt when their furry pal greets them like the world is ending? But with busy lives, work trips, vacations, or just long days, keeping them happy and safe gets tricky and unmanageable. But with changing lifestyles and work pace, new concepts have emerged, and entrepreneurs have weighed in with exclusive ideas! One such idea is pet sitting.

What is pet sitting?

Pet sitting is like hiring a trusted friend to hang out with or take care of your furry buddy while you’re away, such as on work trips or vacations.A sitter comes to your home or you take your pet to theirs, to feed, walk, play with, and love your pet, keeping everything in their comfy routine. It also includes giving timely meds, litter box duty, or just cuddles, so your dog or cat stays happy and chill.

When pets began being more than ‘just’ pets

By the 1970s, people began treating pets like actual family, wanting proper care instead of just keeping pets at home. Casual in-home pet sitting began then, when friends or neighbors would come over or volunteer to feed, walk, and check on animals at home, cutting way down on the stress of kennels or strangers. But it wasn’t working fully, as people forgot visits, messed up schedules, or gave wrong meds and dealt with tricky behaviours. It only became reliable when professional sitters arrived with skills and consistency. This boom of the idea then began relating to dual-income families and travel, gradually increasing demand significantly.

Who first began pet sitting?

According to Pet Sitters International, an educational organization for professional pet sitters, in the 1980s, Patti Moran grew disillusioned with corporate life and was inspired by a close friend who shared her deep love for animals. She launched her own pet-sitting business in North Carolina in 1983, caring for others’ pets as if they were her own was more than a venture and like a true passion. She discovered ample guidance on starting small businesses, but nothing specific to pet sitting or in-home care. She cautiously, measured the risks of entering an unfamiliar industry. Moving forward, securing a business insurance proved challenging, as many providers dismissed or misunderstood professional pet sitting. As her success spread nationwide, Patti shared her expertise in the 1987 book Pet Sitting for Profit, the first comprehensive guide on the subject. Widely regarded as the “bible” of the profession, it has guided numerous entrepreneurs ever since.Today pet sitting has taken a different turn altogether, as travelling has got expensive post the pandemic amid rising costs of stays and flights. Pet sitting has entered this arena where travellers stay in a homeowner’s place for free. They handle simple chores like watering plants, collecting mail, and usually looking after the pets—feeding, walking, playing.
