Petrol and diesel prices rise in India: What travellers can do to save money on the road

In a recent update, petrol and diesel prices in India have increased by around ₹3 per litre across the country on May 15. As per several media reports and TOI, in Delhi, petrol now costs ₹97.77 per litre, while the price of diesel has reached ₹99.67 per litre. Indian travellers are once again feeling the pressure of rising fuel prices amid the ongoing tensions in West Asia, especially around the Strait of Hormuz, which is one of the world’s busiest oil shipping routes. As per several media reports, crude oil prices have increased globally because of supply linked to the Iran-US conflict which has disrupted shipping traffic through Hormuz. India is one of the biggest importers and imports nearly 89% of its crude oil needs. Affect on Indian travellersIt is important for travellers to understand the issues related to the price hike of fuel. For those planning summer road trips, bike expeditions, or even daily commutes, this hike could make holidays more expensive as fuel costs directly affect everything. Be it self-drive vacations or cab fares or flight tickets.Experts have also warned that if the situation in the Middle East remains the same, prices of fuel may hike further in the coming days. The impact can be seen on petrol pumps across the country. Airlines too are facing higher fuel costs, and some carriers have started reducing international operations because of the rising operational expenses. What does this mean for travellersFor travellers, this clearly means planning smarter. On this note, let’s have a look at some practical ways to reduce overall fuel expenses while travel:Opt for trains for longer journeys: Train travels are more economical for longer journeys. Amid the rising fuel cost, Indian Railways remains one of the most affordable travel options in the country.Choose Metro services and electric vehicles: Use metro services for local travel. EVs are another better option. Choose destinations within 200-300 km range: Instead of long-distance road trips, choose nearby travel destinations within 200–300 km. Shorter drives consume less fuel. Travel in groups/Carpool: This is another great idea to save on fuel. Instead of going solo, travel in groups. It can reduce per-person travel expenses.Smart use of navigation apps: It is a fact that traffic wastes a lot of fuel. Therefore, it is important to use navigation apps smartly. It can help travellers avoid crowded routes.

The current fuel price hike is the best example of how international geopolitical events can affect everyday travel. While travellers may not be able to control oil prices, they can control the way they travel amid rising fuel prices. With careful planning and smarter driving habits, travellers can save on petrol and diesel costs.
