Peru’s Sacred Valley is one of the most important places in South America for culture and history. There are old Inca towns, traditional farming communities, and landscapes that have stayed mostly the same for hundreds of years in this area. It also sits close to Machu Picchu, one of the world’s most visited archaeological sites. According to a report by BBC Travel, a new airport planned for the town of Chinchero is now at the centre of a growing debate. Supporters say the airport will make it easier to get to, bring in more tourists, and help rural areas grow economically. People who don’t like it say it could damage fragile ecosystems, upset local communities, and change the valley’s cultural identity. The project has come to stand for the conflict between growth and conservation in modern Peru.

Why Peru’s new airport is planned near Chinchero

The airport is planned near Chinchero, a small Andean town located about 30 kilometres from Cusco. Chinchero sits high in the Andes and is known for its Inca ruins, colonial church, and long-standing weaving traditions. According to BBC Travel, the site was chosen because of its flat plateau, which engineers say is suitable for an airport runway. However, this same plateau has been used by local communities for farming and grazing for generations.

Why Peru wants a new airport

Peru’s government argues that the new airport will ease pressure on Cusco’s existing airport, which operates in a narrow valley and has limited capacity. At present, most international visitors land in Lima and then take a domestic flight to Cusco before travelling onward to the Sacred Valley and Machu Picchu. Officials say a modern airport near Chinchero would allow direct international flights and reduce travel time for tourists.According to the BBC report, the government believes the airport will support long-term tourism growth, create jobs, and improve infrastructure in surrounding rural areas. Tourism is a major part of Peru’s economy, and authorities see better air access as essential to staying competitive.

Concerns raised by archaeologists and locals

The airport has faced opposition since it was first proposed. Archaeologists have warned that construction could disturb undiscovered Inca-era remains buried beneath the soil. The Sacred Valley was a key agricultural and ceremonial region for the Inca Empire, and experts say much of its history is still underground.People who live nearby have also voiced their worries. Some farmers are worried that they will lose access to the land they need for crops and livestock, according to BBC Travel. Some people are worried that more tourists will drive up property values and make younger people less interested in traditional ways of life. People are also worried that noise, pollution, and heavy traffic could change the valley’s character for the worse.

Environmental impact worries

Groups that care about the environment have talked about how fragile the Sacred Valley’s ecosystem is. The area has native plants and animals, as well as traditional farming methods that work well in high-altitude conditions. Some people say that building big things, widening roads, and having more planes in the air could hurt these systems. The BBC says that people who are against it are especially worried about how it will use water and deal with trash. Airports use a lot of water and produce pollution that local infrastructure may not be able to handle. These worries are even more important in a place that is already feeling the effects of climate change and melting glaciers.

The government’s response to criticism

Peruvian authorities say they have taken steps to reduce the project’s impact. According to the BBC, officials claim archaeological surveys have been carried out and that environmental safeguards are in place. The government has also promised to help and pay for the communities that were hurt.People who support the project say that planned growth is better than uncontrolled growth in tourism. They say that better infrastructure can help protect historic sites by better managing the number of visitors and spreading the economic benefits more evenly.

How the airport could change tourism

If it were finished, the airport could change the way tourists see the Sacred Valley in a big way. Direct flights to other countries could bring in more tourists and cut down on travel time. This could help hotels, guides, and artisans make more money, but it could also put a strain on the area’s resources.

A development debate still unfolding

The airport near Chinchero is now more than just a way to get to and from places. This is part of a bigger conversation about how Peru should deal with growth in areas that are very important to its culture. BBC Travel says that the project is still having trouble with the law, protests, and public criticism. As construction plans move forward, the future of the Sacred Valley is unclear. The area is at a crossroads, and the decisions made today will likely have a lasting impact on its culture, economy, and landscape.
