Why are crows associated with ancestors?

Ever wonder why crows are always considered negative and symbolize darkness and death? In Hindu mythology and as per Vedic traditions, crows hold profound spiritual significance, as they are believed to be the connection between the living world and Pitru Loka, which is believed to be the realm of ancestors. Read on to find out…Why are crows linked to ancestors? In Hindu culture, crows are revered during rituals like Shraddha and Pitru Paksha; their black plumage symbolizes the unseen spiritual dimension, while their omniscient cawing often bridges karmic cycles that carry offerings and messages to ensure ancestral peace and blessings for descendants.Messengers from Pitru LokaAccording to Vedic traditions and ancient texts, crows are believed to embody souls of departed forebears, and it is believed that after death these ancestors arrive as crows to partake in Pinda daan (rice balls) offered during ancestral rites. If a crow eats the offering, it signals ancestors’ satisfaction; refusal warns of unresolved karma, urging further remedies.

Ancestral SoulsCrows serve as vahanas for Pitri as they temporarily enter the material plane. According to ancient texts like Garuda Purana, it is described that gatherings of crows at shraddh sites are often drawn by family bonds.Shani Dev and Karmic ConnectionCrows are linked to Saturn (Shani), and they represent discipline, karma, and transformation. Feeding crows on Saturdays is believed to mitigate Shani dosha, resolve pitri dosha and also fix ancestral curses causing delays or misfortune by fostering humility and service.Family UnityCrow’s presence during meals or festivals signifies ancestral approval, reinforcing lineage continuity. In Ramayana lore, crows warn of dangers, mirroring their role as protective guides watching over family prosperity and health.Ritual benefitsAccording to Hindu mythology, it is believed that honoring crows clears blockages in progeny, wealth, and harmony. Daily grain or water offerings accumulate punya, preventing doshas and inviting pitri blessings, especially potent during Amavasya.
