For working parents, balancing work duties along with parenting can feel overwhelming. Some parents even feel the guilt of not being able to truly “connect” with their children because they don’t get much time to spend with them. The truth is, children don’t always need long hours or elaborate plans. What they need is consistency and parents’ presence in simple moments. Even small everyday actions, when done with attention, can build emotional security and trust. Here are 5 realistic ways working parents can spend quality time with children without having to compromise time from their already busy schedules:

Spend 10 minutes reading bedtime stories for your child

In a world dominated by nighttime doomscrolling, this one simple habit can go a long way. Even 10 minutes of reading together at the end of the day can become a deeply grounding routine for a child. Along with being a calming activity for parents, the habit of bedtime reading often becomes a precious memory for children. This activity doesn’t have to be extraordinary or long. On tiring reading only a few pages is also an appreciated gesture.

Cook together and involve children in simple activities

Parents don’t need to plan a baking activity to cook with children. Meaningful connections take place in the most ordinary moments. Asking a child to wash vegetables, peel peas, arrange salad on a plate, or hand over ingredients may seem small, but to them, it feels like a time they can connect with their parents. This is also one of those activities that teaches children responsibility, while being under their parents’ guidance.

Walk and talk after dinner

A short walk after dinner may seem like a small thing, but for many families, it becomes one of the easiest ways to reconnect after a busy day. These walks do not need to be long or planned. It could simply mean walking around the neighbourhood, on the terrace, or even near the apartment building for fifteen or twenty minutes.Apart from being beneficial for health, these walks, along with the nighttime breeze can help parents wind down after a long and tiring day.

Sit near them while doing your own thing

Not every meaningful moment between parents and children needs to involve games, long conversations. Sometimes, simply being physically present near a child while doing your own work can create a strong sense of comfort and connection. Parents who have the liberty to work from home can have their child sit beside them and draw while they do their own adult things. For working parents, this can also remove the guilt of feeling like every interaction must be productive or special.

Let them see your “real life stress” in small doses

Parents often feel they have to constantly present an emotionally calm appearance in front of their child. However, children too must understand that parents are humans too and they can also express their feelings. Allowing children to see small, healthy glimpses of real-life stress can actually help them develop emotional understanding and empathy.
