5 books for toddlers to read this World Book Day

World Book Day is a great time to show your kids how magical stories can be. For little kids, books are more than just words. They are also about the bright colors, the feel of the pages, and the gentle lessons that stay with them as they grow. Here are five books parents can pick up for their little ones early on to start building a “planet-positive” library, one that gently encourages kindness, curiosity, and a love for nature, while giving young explorers stories they’ll actually enjoy reading.

1. Ed Finds a Home – Alia Bhatt

The first picture book in the The Adventures of Ed-a-Mamma series is a simple, heartwarming story about Ed, a lonely, homeless little puppy full of hope, and Alia, a young girl with the superpower of hearing the voices of nature. When their paths cross, an unlikely friendship begins, helping them both feel less alone and understand what “home” really means. Along the way, the story gently touches on kindness, caring for animals, and being more mindful of the world around us.

2. The Rabbit Listened – Cori Doerrfeld

This heartwarming story is a great lesson in emotional intelligence, and very easy for kids to understand. When something bad happens to Taylor, the main character, a bunch of animal friends come to help her “fix” it. The rabbit is the only one who gets it right by sitting still and listening. Every toddler needs this book because it teaches them that sometimes the best way to be a friend is to just be there and listen when someone is sad.

3. Julián Is a Mermaid – Jessica Love

This story is all about self-expression and the freedom to be yourself, and it has beautiful, lush illustrations that are the main focus. Julián, a young boy, sees three women on the subway who are dressed very well and is so inspired that he makes his own mermaid costume at home. The main plot of the story is that his grandmother loved and accepted him no matter what. This gives toddlers a happy and beautiful message about being yourself and being true to your heart.

4. What Can a Citizen Do? – Dave Eggers

This book takes a big, abstract idea like “citizenship” and makes it real and useful for young children. It follows a group of kids who work together to change a lonely island, showing that people can make “nothing” into “something” when they work together. It’s a great way to teach toddlers that they can help their community and that even a small act of kindness can make the world a better place.

5. We Are Water Protectors – Carole Lindstrom

This bold and lyrical story is a powerful call to action for the planet, inspired by movements led by Indigenous people to protect our natural resources. The story is about a young girl who stands up for her community’s water. The beautiful, sweeping artwork brings her mission to life. It’s a great way to teach toddlers about caring for the environment and being an activist. It shows them that they can stand up for the Earth no matter how small they are.Reading Tip for Parents: This World Book Day, try a “nature-first” approach: read a story about the environment and then head to a local park to find the things you just read about. Whether it’s spotting a bird or feeling the rough bark of a tree, that physical validation makes the magic of the story feel real and helps children connect deeply with the world around them.
