World Public Transport Day: Dubai just revealed world’s first air-taxi station near Dubai International Airport (DBX); promises faster, traffic-free travel across the city

In a landmark move, Dubai has unveiled what is being called as the world’s first dedicated air taxi station. The station is built close to Dubai International Airport. With this Dubai has once again proved how it is a leader in futuristic infrastructure and innovations. It indeed is significant and a game changer toward making flying taxis a practical idea and everyday mode of transport. Also referred to as a “vertiport,” this new facility is designed for electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft. The air taxis are developed by firms like Joby Aviation in collaboration with Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA). As per several media reports, these air taxis are expected to start commercial operations by the end of 2026. The future of travel is hereHamdan bin Mohammed Al Maktoum, the deputy Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates, himself did the inspection of the new facility. Dubai Media Office took to X and wrote,“Hamdan bin Mohammed inspects the progress of operations at the world’s first vertical takeoff and landing station for air taxis near Dubai International Airport, with the first station of its kind globally being completed.”Taking to his own X profile, he said, “In Dubai, we turn ambition into reality.”He wrote about his inspection and said he reviewed the progress of Dubai’s air taxi station, the first of its kind in the world. He informed that the station is ready and forms part of a wider network including Downtown, Palm Jumeirah, and Dubai Marina, which will be completed by the end of this year. “The first station is expected to serve around 170,000 passengers annually, and I directed that the service be launched for public use this year, meeting the highest international standards. This project is a key milestone in Dubai’s urban mobility journey, reducing travel time and bringing the city closer. We thank the Roads and Transport Authority team and our local and international partners for delivering this landmark project, aligned with World Public Transport Day on 17 April.”The air taxi station is a fully integrated transport hub and will feature passenger lounges, security screening, boarding gates, and charging infrastructure for electric aircraft. Situated close to Dubai International Airport, the port will connect air travel with ground and aerial mobility. Such stations are planned across the city, including Downtown Dubai, Dubai Marina, and Palm Jumeirah ensuring maximum convenience for users.Reduced travel time Now this is probably the biggest advantage of Dubai’s air taxi system. Speed! The new facility will cut down the travel time drastically. For example, a trip between Dubai International Airport and Palm Jumeirah is about 36 km. By road, it takes around 45-50 minutes but with air taxis, this distance could just take just 10 minutes, which is awesome. This dramatic reduction in travel time is expected to transform daily commuting in Dubai.More about the aircraftThe aircraft themselves are fully electric. These are less noisy and another best part, zero direct emissions, meeting Dubai’s sustainability goals. The air taxi service will be integrated with existing ride-hailing platforms and very soon, passengers may be able to book an air taxi through apps. Capacity: Each aircraft is expected to carry around four passengers along with a pilot, as of now. With this innovation, Dubai’s intention and ambition is clear; to become the first city in the world to operate a fully functional aerial taxi. The project is already estimated to be 70–80% complete, with authorities confident about launching operations by late 2026.Tourism boostFor travellers, especially those passing through Dubai International Airport, this means no getting stuck in long traffic jams. Imagine landing in Dubai and reaching your hotel within a matter of a few minutes—that too by air.
