Shoes can accumulate a lot more dirt than we think. Whether it’s from dusty roads or muddy trails, they can accumulate a lot in a day. However, we often just clean them with a cloth and never really wash them properly. Eventually, this can make them look dull and old.A way to clean certain types of shoes is by using a washing machine. Although this sounds a little crazy, it can actually be a very efficient way to clean them when done correctly. The key is knowing how to wash them correctly without damaging them.Preparing a washing machine for washing shoes can be quite easy with a little knowledge of how to do it correctly. The following four steps will help you wash your shoes in a washing machine safely.

Step 1: Check if your shoes can go in the washing machine

However, before putting your shoes in the washing machine, it is very important to examine the type of material your shoes are made of. Not all shoes are washable in a washing machine. Shoes made of canvas, cotton, nylon, and other materials, such as polyester, are washable in a washing machine because they are able to withstand the effects of water. However, shoes such as leather and suede are not washable in a washing machine because they tend to change texture when they come into contact with water. It is always important to take a minute and examine the tag attached to your shoes. It will be very helpful in determining whether your shoes can be washed in a washing machine.

Step 2: Prepare your shoes before washing them

Preparation plays a big role in how well the cleaning works. Start by taking out the shoelaces and insoles. Washing them separately prevents tangling and helps the shoes dry faster later.Next, remove any visible dirt from the soles. A soft brush or an old toothbrush works well for this. Scrubbing off mud or small stones prevents debris from entering the washing machine.Once the shoes are cleaned from the outside, place them inside a mesh laundry bag. If you do not have one, a pillowcase can also work. This reduces the impact of the shoes hitting the washer drum during the cycle.Adding a few old towels to the machine is also helpful. They balance the load and act as padding while the machine runs.

Step 3: Select the right wash settings

Once the shoes are ready, the next step is to select the appropriate washing machine settings. The gentle or delicate setting of the washing machine is the best option, as this setting involves a slower movement. For the washing process, cold water is always recommended instead of hot water, as hot water might damage the adhesive properties of the glue used to hold different parts of the shoe together, as well as cause the shrinking of the materials.Liquid detergent instead of powder detergent is also recommended, as this type of detergent dissolves easily and does not leave any white spots on the materials. Most washing cycles usually take between forty-five minutes to an hour.

Step 4: Dry the shoes the right way

Once this wash cycle is complete, you can remove the shoes from the washing machine and take them out of the mesh bag.The drying stage is a critical one because shoes can be destroyed by heat.Instead of putting them in a dryer, you should place them in a well-ventilated area where air can freely circulate.Stuffing them with paper towels, newspaper, or a piece of cloth will help draw out moisture from them while at the same time help them retain their shape. The amount of time it takes for them to dry depends on the type of shoe, but it is usually overnight or a whole day.Once this is over, you can reinsert your insoles and laces and wear them again.
