Anees Bazmee, Neelam and Chunky Panday recall Pahlaj Nihalani: 'Once, he knocked my door at 5 am'

Veteran producer Pahlaj Nihalani, who passed away on June 4 at the age of 76, leaves behind a legacy closely tied to mainstream Hindi cinema. Over a career spanning nearly four decades, he produced several commercial successes and played a pivotal role in introducing talents who would go on to become household names, including Govinda and Chunky Panday.Following his demise, several industry colleagues reflected on the filmmaker’s contribution to their careers and the passion that defined his life.

Chunky Panday recalls the meeting that changed his life

For Chunky Panday, Nihalani was more than a producer. The actor credits him with giving him his first major break in Bollywood after an unexpected encounter in Juhu. In a chat with Mid-day, the actor remembered Pahlaj Nihalani and his contributions.“We met under hilarious circumstances at a hotel bathroom in Juhu. Pahlajji helped me out of an awkward situation and asked me to meet him at his office the next day. Then I did two films back-to-back with him, ‘Aag Hi Aag’, and ‘Paap Ki Duniya’. I owe him a big thanks for launching my career.” The actor revealed that Nihalani treated him like family, but was uncompromising when it came to filmmaking. “He made me do 32 retakes for my first shot; he wanted it perfect.”

The determination behind ‘Aankhen’

Among their many collaborations, Chunky remembers ‘Aankhen’ as one of Nihalani’s most remarkable achievements. Despite facing scheduling hurdles, the producer pushed ahead and delivered one of the biggest hits of its time. “He made it under tough circumstances. Nobody had dates available except Govinda, David Dhawan, Anees Bazmee, and I.” The 1993 comedy went on to become a massive box-office success and remains one of the most celebrated films associated with Nihalani’s career.

Anees Bazmee on a producer who lived and breathed cinema

Writer-director Anees Bazmee, who worked with Nihalani on several projects, remembered him as someone whose enthusiasm for films never switched off. According to Bazmee, late-night discussions about scripts and scenes were a regular part of their working relationship.“Once, he knocked at my door at 5 am. He wanted to tweak the scene we were to shoot that day. Since everyone was asleep at my house, we sat at a nearby tea stall and I wrote the changes on a tissue paper. He was a dildaar producer!” Bazmee’s recollection paints a picture of a filmmaker constantly thinking about ways to improve his films, regardless of the hour.

Neelam reflects on his faith in her

Actor Neelam also shared a fond memory from the beginning of her association with Nihalani. She remembered how confident he was about their future collaborations from the very first meeting. “When I first met him for a narration, he told me, ‘Baby, we will do many hit films together.’ I had no idea I’d go on to have so many hits with him.” She described him as a warm-hearted and generous individual who always supported the artists he worked with.

The producer behind Govinda’s rise

Nihalani played a crucial role in launching Govinda’s film career. His production ‘Ilzaam’ became the actor’s first release and marked the beginning of one of Bollywood’s most successful commercial runs. He later backed several hit films featuring Govinda, helping establish the actor as one of the leading stars of the 1980s and 1990s.

A career marked by hits and controversies

As a producer, Nihalani delivered popular entertainers such as ‘Shola Aur Shabnam’ and ‘Aankhen’, both of which enjoyed strong audience support. He also introduced Chunky Panday through ‘Aag Hi Aag’ and continued working with him in films including ‘Mitti Aur Sona’.Beyond production, Nihalani’s stint as chairperson of the Central Board of Film Certification between 2015 and 2017 often drew criticism. His tenure was particularly discussed for demanding cuts in several films, including the much-debated ‘Udta Punjab’.Yet for many actors and filmmakers who began their journeys under his banner, Pahlaj Nihalani will be remembered not for the controversies, but for his unwavering belief in talent, his perfectionism, and his enduring love for cinema.
